CANAAN - A 16-year-old junior at Telstar Regional High School was killed Saturday morning in a three-vehicle accident on Route 2.
Dorothy "Dee Dee" Palmer of Andover, a member of the school's Future Business Leaders of America club, was en route to a conference at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport when she was struck by an oncoming van.
She was driving her own vehicle behind a Telstar school bus carrying four other students and a teacher to the same conference, according to state police. Palmer had decided to drive her own car because she was planning to visit the University of Maine after the conference, in advance of applying to it next year.
"She was just a terrific kid," Theodore Davis, principal of Telstar, said Saturday night. "She was a very quiet young lady and well-liked by her peers ... All of our thoughts and prayers are with the family."
Palmer was an active member of the business club, as well as a member of the field hockey team.
The school will be open from noon until 4 p.m. today to offer counseling by its crisis response team. The services will be available at Telstar again Monday as well.
"At this point we're doing the best we can, thinking about the student body as a whole and trying to meet their needs," said Davis.
The Telstar teacher, Jennifer Bennett, 36 of Bethel, and students Thomas Henley, Mathew Lauro, Elizabeth Forkus and Amy Farrington, all suffered minor injuries after the bus was sideswiped by an on-coming van. Bus driver Tommy Sweetser, 62, of Bethel also had minor injuries. All were treated at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and released.
The driver of the van, Stephen Carter, 49, of Whitefield, told police he had dropped a handkerchief in the van and was reaching for it when his vehicle crossed the center line, sideswiped the bus and then slammed into Palmer's vehicle. Both the bus and the van overturned and came to rest on their sides, reported police. Palmer died at the scene.
According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, no decision had been made on charges as of Saturday evening.
Earlier in the day a Naples woman was killed when she lost control of her vehicle in Casco. Ericka Thibodeau, 34, reportedly died at the scene after her car overturned on Route 11 curve. The crash was reported at 3:20 a.m., according to state police. |

Students are not required to ride school district transportation to and from school and/or school functions. It is the parents' choice and decision. Additionally, Ms. Palmer had been given parental permission to drive herself to the FBLA conference. My thoughts and prayers are with the Palmer family and the entire SAD #44 community.

You were such a wonderful girl, a good head on your shoulders, a leader wanting to make a difference in this world. You may not have gotten a chance to go far in this world but Dee Dee, you touched everyone around us and made a difference in our lives. RIP. :-(

She was someones precious daughter,sister,grand-daughter,neice,freind and classmate. She had a Mother and Father that loved her dearly. How can anyone blame the parent? Put the blame where it belongs, on someone who thought his hanky was more important than keeping an eye on the road and saving a very special young lady.

Thats punishment enough.i lost a son a few months ago in a car accident....I know how the parents are feeling, and I know how the other side must be feeling.

Posted By:tiss at November 4, 2007 5:31 PM (Suggest Removal) Tis tis on anyone who is using ragedy to make room for blame.
A family has lost their child, other children witnessed this, a man who was reaching for a hankie is now and forever changed for this simple mistake and a school teacher who was taking our future leaders on a field trip is living with the shock and sadness of coming home with one less student! To those who are pointing fingers - turn those fingers to yourselves and shake them. I think I heard a saying once about "casting stones” How does that go again?
Deepest sympathy to all involved. Peace to your hearts.

Posted By:anon at November 4, 2007 6:58 PM (Suggest Removal) OH MY GOD!! from the article I read,,,it wasnt her fault at all... GET WITH IT PEOPLE... She was in the wrong place at the wrong time...Geesh..she
was going to look into advancement of schooling after.. I know what some might be feeling.. I have a 16 yr old myself who goes for her license the end of this month, and trust me.. I am not looking forward to it.. but on a good note.. I have riden with her and she is very alert.. But, even us, the adults can be caught off guard, and its a shame for any parent to go thru what hers will... Give the family a break.. not that needed... it WANT HER FAULT! As far as the guy who reched down for the hankie.... well like some of you said.. he will live with that for the rest of his life.. but on another note.. I for one dont believe it was his intention, (of yours or mine)(which we all could be at one time or another)(none of use get to pick what happens and at what time).. was not a good time for those involved

Posted By:Observing at November 4, 2007 7:37 PM (Suggest Removal) DeeDee was my cousin and she will be so sorely missed by several communities. as has become common for the victims of tragedies such as this, her friends and family have been in the works of immortalizing her Myspace page... A page on which she listed her occupation as 'Loving life' and listed all three of the communities she has left her imprint on as home. She's our angel now. Only the good go young and they Don't get much better than Dorothy Dawn.

She sounds like an amazing young woman who had a bright and promising future ahead. I only wish I had some magic words to ease your pain, but please know you all will be kept close to heart and be in my prayers.

Posted By:GW firefighters wife at November 5, 2007 3:25 PM (Suggest Removal) Mister Clifford Drake; do you have children? This is a severe tragedy to our community. If you read Dee Dee's obituary, you would see just how many lives, she touched. Some kids are driving at age 15. Anything could of happened, a moose, a dog, a deer..........anything. This man is going to punish himself over and over. Everyones lives from the accident are going to change from that day forward. Telstar is going for the State Championship Tuesday evening at Fitzpatrick Stadium, a chance of a lifetime for some of these players, and Dee Dee was part of that team and I am sure she will be right there to guide them.
To the family:
I know quite a few of you and even the few I don't, I am so sorry this tragedy had to happen, expecially in the peak of Dee Dee's years as a child.
My heart goes out to you. Just keep looking at that bright sun and bright star and you will know she is looking down on you!

Posted By:Matthew at November 5, 2007 7:02 PM (Suggest Removal) As one of the 60 or so kids who were at the FBLA conference on saturday, and as a state FBLA officer, I can truly say I am so sorry this happened. I hope Dorothy's family is okay and recovering. A member of the Telstar team is one of our state officers as well, and we wondered why he was late to the conference, and we were then informed that there had been an accident with the bus, we didn't know anything about Dorothy until much later. All I can say is I hope everyone can recover from this terrible loss.
