RUMFORD - The first in a series of Texas Hold 'Em poker tournaments to benefit next year's Fourth of July fireworks kicks off Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on Waldo Street.

Eddie Shurtleff, president of the Moontide Water Festival Committee, has organized the tournament and will operate it.

"Texas Hold 'Em is the most popular poker game in the country. It's on television at at casinos," Shurtleff said.

Those who want to take part should preregister by calling Shurtleff at 364-2795. Tourney players may also register at 12:30 p.m. that Sunday at the VFW hall. No more than 100 players may take part, according to the state license, Shurtleff said, and participants must be at least 21 years old.

If 100 people take part in the tournament, the No. 1 winner could walk away with $2,600. The entry fee to play is $105.

To pay for equipment and required state licenses, Shurtleff said at least three or four tournaments must be held for the committee to break even.

The tournament begins at 2 p.m. with a break for supper at 4:45 p.m., then resumes.

The VFW will offer food and an open bar during the event.

The second Texas Hold 'Em tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 15. Each subsequent event through spring will also be held on a Saturday.

Shurtleff said the festival committee spent $23,000 on the 2007 fireworks display and associated costs. They hope to raise $25,000 for next year.

Besides the poker tournament, the committee receives funds from Rumford and surrounding towns, and donations.

He said letters asking for contributions will go out sometime next month. The annual July Fourth event will be a one-day affair next year, instead of a longer one as had been held previously.
