Soldier from Houlton dies in Iraq
Monday, December 17, 2007
AUGUSTA (AP) - A career soldier from Houlton has died in Iraq, Gov. John Baldacci said Sunday.
Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Allen Lowery, 38, was killed Friday in Mosul. Lowery was serving with the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, III Corps, based in Fort Hood, Texas.
Lowery died of wounds he sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire, said U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, who joined the other members of Maine's congressional delegation in offering their condolences.
Lowery's father lives in Houlton, Baldacci said. Flags will be ordered flown at half-staff on the day of Lowery's funeral.
"While we honor his memory and his service, we will also keep his family in our prayers as they cope with this terrible loss," Baldacci said. |
