LEWISTON - City and religious leaders gathered Friday to condemn what some are calling an act of hate targeting the Somali community.

On Thursday several copies of an anti-Muslim poster appeared outside a downtown Somali-owned store. The poster showed an angry Rottweiler beneath the words "Lost Dog" and "Mohammed." It said, "Mohammed is NOT GOOD with people or kids. Do not trust him." It included a phony phone number.

The posters were affixed to a tree and a utility pole outside the Barwaqo Halal Store at the corner of Chestnut and Lisbon streets. They were discovered by store owner Hussein Ahmed.

The Lewiston Police Department and the Maine Attorney General's Office are investigating. Police said at the very least the posters are harassment, and could be a hate crime.

Friday's show of support for Muslims was organized by Rabbi Hillel Katzir of the Temple Shalom of Auburn. Katzir also represents the Lewiston-Auburn Interfaith Clergy.

Officials representing churches, the city, Sisters of Charity Health Care and the Maine People's Alliance stood in front of Ahmed's store Friday. They "turned out to say these posters that were left, this kind of hate, this is not us. This is not Lewiston," Katzir said. "We wanted to be out here to make sure the general public knows that, that we represent the greater Lewiston and not these crazies who do this kind of thing."

Words can hurt, the rabbi said. "The words on this poster have hurt members of our community. We're here to offer our support and our healing to them."

When any religion is attacked, all religions are attacked, Katzir said. He added that Mainers need to understand that their human rights "depend on safeguarding the rights of all Mainers."

Sister Claire Lepage of Lewiston said she laments the harassment "of our local Muslim community. These are peaceful religious members that have earned our respect." People need to remember "these people come from war-torn countries. We have a responsibility to welcome them in our city."

Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert agreed that the "cowardly" posters are not reflective of the community. The incident is being investigated by police and will be prosecuted fully, Gilbert said. "The city supports people of all faiths, of all nationalities."

Father Michael Seavey of St. Joseph's and St. Patrick's churches read a statement from Maine Catholic Bishop Joseph Malone, who said it's discouraging "to see harassing displays of hatred aimed at peaceful people who are part of our own communities."

Afterward, Ahmed said he was thankful for the show of support. The posters insulted Muslims and the prophet Mohammed, he said, adding the posters do "not reflect all the members of the Lewiston-Auburn community." They were a criminal act by someone trying "to divide this community," Ahmed said. "We are telling them we are not going to be easily divided."

Previous incidents, such as a pig's head rolled into a mosque in 2006, made the community stand together. "We prevailed. We stood strong," Ahmed said. "We remain committed to have a community that is free of hate crimes."

Few take part in this sort of behavior, observed Father Seavey. "But we all hear lots of things based on stereotypes and ignorance."

Whether at home, at work or in the community, when ignorant statements are spoken, everybody has a moral responsibility to challenge it, Seavey said. "People need to say, 'That's not true' or 'That's unacceptable.' "

Anyone with information about the posters is encouraged to call Lewiston police officer Matthew Cashman at 513-3139, ext. 6359.

As a matter of curiosity, is it against the law in Larry Gilbert's Lewiston, or Bishop Malone's Maine to say that Muhammad was not good with children? I should think given his marriage to Aisha, that might well be a fair comment. Aside from that, just what sort of police state does Larry Gilbert and the Diocese of Portland have in store for us?

If Officer Cashman, (aka Huggybear) is on the job, the perp should get nailed. Now, if only Mayor Moonbeam can convince Achmed to give up his DNA and fingerprints so Mr Cashman can identify the real culprit, (if there is one).

John, I think Mayor Moonbeam will be rocking the boat in 2008. He already realized there are no grants on the federal or state level to cover the associated expenses that come with more immigrants. The municipality suddenly became a charity with taxpayers footing the future costs.

Chad, we'll have to see what Gilbert plans, or perhaps better said, what the Bishop tells him to plan. Right now its Gilbert's job to make sure those checks from the city keep right on going out to Catholic Charities for taking care of the Bishop's Somalis. In the meantime, we have a new council. Perhaps some of the welfare and housing subsidies available to the our new immigrants aren't mandates at all but rather available only out of the goodness of the local taxpayers. If that is so, and if we are truly facing a major tax increase here in Lewiston, it might behoove this new council to take a fresh look at the taxpayers' subsidies for the Bishop's social engineering experiments. In the meantime, we can save a little money by not wasting police time and our money on creating a gestapo-like thought police to make sure no one expresses any dislike of the Bishop's and the mayor's brave new world.

WOW. Look how upset folks get when you take away (or even try to hinder) their (self proclaimed) "right" to hurt others! From pig heads being rolled into a place of worship, Muslim children being taunted with pig meat and now flyers publicly hung to humiliate and defame .... and what do these "bloggers" do? -cry foul that they are being told these acts are not right or acceptable. That's pretty damn shameful ... not to mention what they are also teaching their children (that it's okay to pick on someone (for their religion, for being different, for their ethnic background and or skin color). What if it was Jesus or the Pope who was portrayed on those flyers (as a rat or some other type of negatively thought animal)? Oh, you'd be appalled then ... you'd be offended -and all those other feelings you are denying others the right to. The above posts are awful ... barbaric and devoid of actual thought and compassion. The posts above run on hate for their life's blood ... mob mentality "strengthens" them (at least in their mind(s). We all have such a limited run/time on this earth -why make others spend their moments under the sun in sufferage? Seems like folks are trying to compensate for something missing (love) in their own lives and need to project all this hate and animosity onto another (easily identifiable) group ... in some sort of ill-conceived and repugnant excorcism. It doesn't work, folks ... you're still miserable and will still have to deal with your own personal vacancies and ineptitudes ... and all the wonderful consequences of insisting upon living in your own hateful world. "Sorry" to rain on your parades by saying something adverse to what your clinging to ... but sometimes, if you just shut-up and listen ... a voice of reason can be heard. Be good to others, do unto them as you would have done unto yourselves. We all bleed, we all feel pain -recognize that and help your fellow human out.

..08.01.05 11:11 pm HST • .. Enshallah.. Hmm.. Somalians..n e one ever been to Somalia ?..no, ok..yet we are armchair experts on the place, the poeple & Eritrea, Ethopia, the Comorros, Djubuti, the Sudan, the rest of the horn of Africa and the Islam faith, of course Having served as a foreign service officer in charge of foreign aid that goes there.. yes... i, for one, would not want to be from there or necessitate have to call it my home.. Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in .. Some do call it home. Iman got out..married a guy by the name of David Bowie..and both are raising a wonderful family..in the United Kingdom..very successfully and beautifully We, meaning all of us, lost a foreign service officer in Sudan thebother day doing his duty..that one last measure of service..to his God, and our shared and common humanity Our religions draw us together black hawk..we worship the same..one.. God..Muslims & Christians ..along with our Jewish bretheran..Jesus was a Jew.. don't forget. War is folly. It eats it's young. Talk with some Somalians..you may be pleasantly surprised how many are better educated than you or i will ever be; doctors, teachers, lawyers, community activists and the like.. i merely mention all this in memory of a friend named John Granville, 33, an American Foreign Service Officer by Presidential appointment and also Abdelrahman Abbas Rahama, 39, a locally employed Sudanese national, who were serving the common interests of the U.S. and the Sudan in bringing peace and stability to a country that has long been wracked by violence and conflict .Shalom.
