DENMARK - A certified nursing assistant was seriously injured Sunday night after her vehicle crashed on Route 160.

Jade Darby, 22, of Porter was thrown from her 1999 Plymouth Neon after it hit a patch of ice and rolled over three times. Deputy Joshua Wyman of the Oxford County Sheriff's Office said Darby was driving to work at Bridgton Hospital and was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

"She ended up being extremely lucky," Wyman said.

Darby was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with a laceration to her forehead. Wyman said she also complained of a pain in her left leg, but it was not broken.

The accident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. in front of the home of Robert Logan, who called 911. A visitor at Logan's home at the time reported seeing another vehicle with a scraped side driving away from the scene and took its license plate number.

"I don't know how they're involved," Wyman said. "It's just kind of a person of interest that I'd like to talk to and find out why they left the scene of an accident."

Wyman said the plate is registered to a 1990 Mercury Topez owned by Timothy McLaughlin, who has a post office box in Cornish. Wyman said he has not been able to contact McLaughlin, but also said there were no signs of a two-vehicle collision at the site.

"Her front tires were pretty bald, and I believe it's a front-wheel-drive vehicle," Wyman said. "So that would more than likely be one of the reasons why she crashed."

Darby landed about 15 feet from the place where her vehicle came to a stop on its tires. Wyman said a passing vehicle with three men in it, including a Massachusetts EMT, stopped to assist and covered Darby with jackets to keep her warm.

Wyman said Darby's mother told him Darby was recovering.

A report on Darby's condition was not available from CMMC on Monday afternoon.
