Obama carries Maine

AUGUSTA - Barack Obama defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton in Maine presidential caucuses Sunday, grabbing a majority of delegates as the state's Democrats overlooked the snowy weather and turned out in heavy numbers for municipal gatherings.
Democrats in 420 Maine towns and cities were deciding how the state's 24 delegates will be allotted at the party's national convention in August. Despite the weather, turnout was "incredible," party executive director Arden Manning said.
With 95 percent of the participating precincts reporting, Obama led in state delegates elected over Clinton, 2,079 to 1,396, with 18 uncommitted.
Obama exulted in his recent victories in Maine and elsewhere, telling a crowd of 18,000 Sunday evening in Virginia Beach, Va., that "we have won on the Atlantic Coast, we have won on the Gulf Coast, we have won on the Pacific Coast" and places in between.
Obama won 15 of Maine's delegates to the national convention and Clinton won nine. In the overall race for the nomination, Clinton leads with 1,136, including separately chosen party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Obama has 1,108.
The voting came a day after Obama and Clinton made personal appeals here, and after Obama picked up wins in Louisiana, Nebraska and Washington.
Organizers had expected heavy participation at the caucuses, but snow was falling and gusting winds hit as many of the gatherings were scheduled.
The weather didn't appear to have hurt turnout. Caucuses started late in Bangor and several other locations across the state because so many people showed up that they were lined up outside the doors.
In Maine's largest city, Democrats carrying "Obama" and "Hillary" signs waited to get into the citywide caucus at Portland High School in separate lines that snaked nearly three city blocks in opposite directions.
Colin Johnson, an Obama supporter in Portland, said the Illinois senator is not a typical politician. "I'm convinced he's a once-in-a-generation leader," he said.
"He's young and energetic and Washington and the White House could benefit from some fresh air," said Joe Lewis, another Obama supporter. But Tony Donovan said Obama can use some more seasoning. Donovan was supporting Clinton because she, like him, was a baby boomer who shared similar values and because she has the experience and the team to lead in Washington.
"Obama's a great guy. He'll be great in eight years," Donovan said. "He doesn't have the experience in the Senate. He doesn't have the experience in Washington. He's not ready."
A line waited to get into Augusta's caucus as Gov. John Baldacci, a Clinton supporter, addressed the crowd of a couple hundred at the city's Cony High School. Asked why he decided to wait in line to participate, John Brandt said, "Getting rid of Republicans, once and for all."
Though Maine's national delegate count is small, Clinton and Obama, along with surrogates, came to the state Saturday as their campaigns drew tighter after Super Tuesday.
Thousands of people packed the Bangor Auditorium to hear Obama on Saturday and hundreds more who weren't allowed inside greeted him as he arrived. People also were stopped at the door as Clinton held a town hall-style gathering nearby at the University of Maine at Orono. She later stopped in Lewiston.
Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, and husband, Bill, also visited, while Obama supporter Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts campaigned in two cities in the days before the vote.
Both campaigns hit Maine heavily with radio and TV advertising, and voters' homes were being called with pre-taped messages in support of both candidates. On Sunday, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, visited Maine caucuses on Obama's behalf.
On Clinton's side, Baldacci, Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern and New York Rep. Gregory Meeks campaigned.
The high level of excitement across the state contrasted with earlier expectations that the post-Super Tuesday timing of the caucuses would dampen voter interest.
A competitive GOP race a week earlier also helped to enliven interest in the Maine Republicans' nonbinding caucuses, which were won by Mitt Romney. He dropped out of the race last week, making it likely that Arizona Sen. John McCain would become the GOP nominee.

Having lived through the election of 2000, this country cannot afford another fiasco like that. If the will of the people is ignored, I predict that many will stay away from the election.

People are supposed to be smarter than this! This man is no patriot or even a good person.

He also doesn't place his right hand over his heart when the National Anthem is performed, which is extremely poor form for a Presidential candidate, IMHO. 2. Will he place his hand on the Bible or the Quaran when he, heaven forbid, gets sworn in as the 44th President? That will be interesting to see. 3. Mrs. Bill Clinton is a major problem for the Democrat high command. It is evident that even 1/2 the Democrats don't like her. This was supposed to be a coronation!

Posted By:sheesh at February 11, 2008 8:00 AM (Suggest Removal) On Channel 6 news last night they reported that a lot of people in Portland didn't get a chance to vote because the poles closed! SO that IS NOT FAIR right there! IF they hold an election they should let EVERY SINGLE PERSON that wants to vote VOTE! It makes me mad because they say every count votes? NOT in this instance. They said people stood in line for over 3 hours to get in the door and then where turned away because the poles where closing? What is wrong with this picture? And I HOPE that most of you all do realize that they have people who make the final decision so why do they say your vote counts? If you vote for one guy and the delegate likes the other, who are they going to vote to go on? Who they want. The voting system is so screwed up that it's not funny. To me it should be EVERY vote and not delegates. Those delegates make the final decision and MY VOTE DOES NOT COUNT is how I feel. I am so saddend that Mr Obama, who I do not like won last night and by everything I have read and seen, where are the people that voted for him because I know not one that did!

When you have served, you salute the flag with hand over brow, when you are civilian, you salute the flag with hand on heart. He does neither. He won't even recite the pledge of allegience. That is an injustice to our country.

There are far more legitimate reasons to deny Obama (or Clinton) your vote than which school he attended. Let's just hope these two spend the next six months wasting their time and money infighting to ensure a brokered convention while united Republicans save their money to crush whatever weakened candidate eventually emerges.

If we live in a country where we judge people by the number of times she or he salute, we have come to a rather sad metric. This ain't the military.
I find that being a good citizen, helping this country be a great place, and working to make it even better is a LOT MORE important than blindly moving my hands around. But that's just my crazy talk, I guess...

There is ONE video of Obama and other democratic hopefuls and they are looking over their sholders at something and Obama has his hands clasped in front og him. The next video shows him with his hand over his heart. HE IS CHRISTIAN people. ANd by the way, we no longer mandate hands on hearts for the pledge. And please Republicans, the last thing you ought to talk about is the lack of military service; Bush, Cheney, Rove, all 5 of Romney's sons etc.....Eddy Rutledge are you kookoo for coco puffs? Sleeper Cell? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha who kisses the Saudi's on the mouth? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha let me give you a hint, it isn't a Democrat, it isn't anyone who is running for President, he is from a very welathy family who has ties to Saudi Arabia....he pronounces Nuclear nu-cu-lar just like his Daddy....

It is the fact that even the Christain church he belongs to is racist. In gods eyes and Christainity Man should be color blind. I think his false christainity is a cover up for his true beliefs

Posted By:Dr. Hassan Bin Sobah at February 11, 2008 11:48 AM (Suggest Removal) Let's get one thing straight...President Bush did serve. He flew F-106 fighters for the Air National Guard. Last I checked, they do not permit civilians to fly ANG fighter aircraft. To say that service in the National Guard is not serving is to ignore the brilliant contributions that the National Guard has made against the Islamic terrorists in the Middle East. You Bush haters have got to get your facts correct. I realize the Bush Derangement Syndrome is now well established but try to get over it.

Posted By:ray at February 11, 2008 11:53 AM (Suggest Removal) Right on Edward. It is not the man's color, politics, etc, but his poor choice of a house of worship. America, in the last 45 years has gone through a lot to become a nation not quite so divided by race as we once were. We are still not perfect or color blind, but if Mr. Obama is of the same ilk as his professed house of worship we would be turning the calendar back 45 years or more on the issue of racial tension. It does not matter what color a racist is, what matters is that a racist is not tolerant. It is unfortunate that Mr. Obama has chosen to worship with such a group as he is a very slick politician. With the gift he was given by God he could become a great contributor to this country, but we must hold him to the same standards we would a person of the white race, or for that matter of any race.

Posted By:Dr. Hassan Bin Sobah at February 11, 2008 1:36 PM (Suggest Removal) OK, now we have gone from "Bush didn't serve" to an admission that he did serve. Now, incredibly, he "only flew when he felt like it" and "he deserted." The truth is he flew when he was scheduled to fly, by his unit commander. He also did not "desert." The President has hundreds of hours of flight time on his record, many in the very challenging F-106. And there is no evidence of any desertion on the part of President Bush. If one looks at Mrs. Bill Clinton's husband's record, on the other hand, one could make the case that he "failed to report" for his military service. In other words, he didn't dodge the draft, he was drafted, and then failed to report.

You sound like my mother-in-law who believes all the e-mails with "truths" about Obama and his religion. Maybe you all should do some real research, otherwise you're just voting with ignorance. Religion shouldn't be a factor here, we elected a god fearing christian and now we're at war over his lies and "false intelligence", what a commander in chief he is.

So it really doesn't matter who we vote for, they are both going to be in and we're all in a fine mess anyway. I'm voting for McCain, because I don't want either Hillary or Obama in.
