Buckfield, Richmond advance in Tuesday morning action from Augusta

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Buckfield 85, Seacoast Christian 29

Buckfield finished just shy of setting the mark for most points scored in a game.

Monmouth scored 89 in a game in Class D in 1991. The Bucks 85-point effort was still more than any other Western Maine team has done in 16 years.

Lindsay Henderson led the Bucks with 21 points. Three other Bucks hit double figures, including Ashlee Hamann with 15, Kasey Farrington 11 and Abby Jones 10. Alyssa Henderson added nine while Alicia Patrie came off the bench and chipped in eight. Eight different kids scored for the Bucks, which play Richmond in Thursday's semifinal.

Seacoast was led by Emily Hennessey with 8.

The Bucks outscored Seacoast 16-4 in the final quarter and closed in on the record. Buckfield, which used its bench for much of the second half, played conservatively down the stretch and didn't go for the new record.

The 34 field goals was also five shy of Monmouth's 39.

Alyssa Henderson, who was injured earlier in the game, came back and played well, sporting only a few floor burns.

Richmond barely hangs on for the 56-53 victory. Forest Hills erased a 53-45 deficit despite being down to four players in the closing minutes.

The Tigers tied the game with an Elise Begin steal with 1:28 left. The Bobcats milked the clocked and set up a corner three-pointer for Megan DeRaps from the left side. She barely got the shot off in time but swished it in the closing seconds to deliver the game-winner.

Forest Hills lost Jessica Worster, Kristin Begin and Crystal Allen to fouls in the fourth quarter and were down to just four players. Richmond fouled out Melanie Schanck and Stephanie O'Brien but had a seemingly comfortable lead to work with.

The Tigers' scrappy defense, despite being outmanned, erased the deficit with eight straight points in the final minutes. Begin hit a three-pointer. Jasmine Worster scored on a steal. After a Kaila Achey free throw, Begin tied it with another steal.

Begin led Forest Hills with 17. Richmond got 22 from DeRaps, 12 in the final quarter, while Schanck finished with 17.
