Monmouth advanced to Thursday's semifinal against Waynflete. The Mustangs beat the Flyers handily in a preseason game at Winthrop.

Waynflete 52, Mt. Abram 40

AUGUSTA - Margaret Veroneau scored 29 points and made six steals to lead No. 3 Waynflete past No. 6 Mt. Abram, 52-40, in the Western Class C girls' basketball quarterfinals.

Mt. Abram ends its season and its defense of the state championship at 13-7.

Kenni Norton led the Roadrunners with 15 points.

The Roadrunners' needle already was teetering in the neighborhood of the red slash when they somehow scored 14 straight points to tie the game at 34 with 5:57 remaining.

Waynflete (17-3) answered with an 8-2 run of its own. Later consecutive steals by Veroneau, Mariam Qazi and Nina Russem smothered three straight Mt. Abram possessions and put it out of reach for the exhausted 'Runners.

Morgan and Anna Woodhouse combined for 12 points and 33 rebounds to assist the Flyers, who carved out their second straight playoff win over a Mountain Valley Conference opponent steeped in championship tradition.

Waynflete routed Dirigo in the preliminary round.

Morgan Cummings added 10 points and contagious hustle for the Roadrunners, who shot 17-of-60 (28 percent) from the field.

Mt. Abram led 9-5 early on the strength of back-to-back 3-pointers by Mikayla Burbank and Cummings.

Veroneau scored Waynflete's final six points of the first period to produce a 13-11 lead. The Flyers never trailed after Veroneau's 3-pointer off a Qazi steal with 43 seconds remaining in the quarter.

With Veroneau (three fouls) on the bench at the end of third quarter, however, the Roadrunners launched the rally that pulled them even.

Burbank, Cummings and Norton each made two thefts during the sensational span of a little more than three minutes, and all three scored four points in that time.
