Greely puts end to Falcons' season

PORTLAND - High school tournament basketball is often about resilience, and the winners can have just as much of it as the losers.
Mountain Valley had the resilience to withstand Greely's unconscious 3-point shooting in the first half and make a game of Tuesday's Western B quarterfinal. Greely had the toughness to overcome the mistakes Mountain Valley's pressure was forcing it into in the second half and is moving on.
Greely's hot 3-point shooting early and solid free throw shooting late were ultimately enough to get the sixth-seeded Rangers past No. 3 Mountain Valley with a 43-40 win at the Portland Expo. Greely will meet No. 2 Falmouth in the semifinals on Thursday.
"They're a tough, physical team, and that wore on us a little bit until the end," Greely coach Sam Farrell said. "It put us out of what we wanted to do. What helped us is I had some kids come off the bench, Nicki Faietta, especially, and Mackenzie Ross, and gave us sparks."
Faietta and Ross combined for three of the Rangers' four 3-pointers in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 15-4 lead. Megan McDevitt added two more treys in the second quarter, and Greely led by 10 at the half.
"I thought defensively we didn't do a horrible job. We just couldn't extend to them quick enough to get a hand in their face," Mountain Valley coach Richard Allen said.
Greely (13-6) extended the lead to 14 early in the third quarter before the Falcons (16-3) went on a 14-2 run to get back into it. Nine Greely turnovers in the period, 3-pointers by Lauren Lepage and Tanya Martin and a buzzer-beater by Lepage pulled them within four heading into the fourth quarter.
"We did something we haven't normally done all year long - full court press," Allen said. "We had to do something different to get back in the game."
Meagan Maifeld made it a one-point game by drilling a 3 on Mountain Valley's first possession of the fourth quarter, then Martin gave the Falcons their first lead by hitting a pair of free throws. Megan Grondin responded with a three-point play for Greely, the second of four lead changes in a three-minute span late in the quarter.
Grondin went on to score six of the Rangers' eight points in the quarter, knocking down three out of four free throw attempts on either side of the one-minute mark to put Greely in front for good.
Maifeld had a chance to put the Falcons back on top with a drive into the lane, but her runner bounced off the iron and into Grondin's arms. McDevitt got fouled and made both of her free throws for the winning margin. Lepage's bid to tie the game with a couple of seconds left was just short. Grondin finished with 13 points and McDevitt added 11 for Greely. Maifeld and Martin led Mountain Valley with 10 points apiece. |
