OLD ORCHARD BEACH (AP) - A 22-year-old college dropout was arrested Friday in the deaths of three family members whose bodies were found in their burned-out home, state police said.

Matthew Cushing was charged with three counts of murder and one count of arson in the stabbing deaths of his mother, Carol Bolduc, 42; his stepfather, Christopher Bolduc, 42; and his half-brother, Joshua Bolduc, 15.

At a news conference, police declined to comment on a motive but said Cushing admitted to the killings. Investigators said a backpack containing a bloody knife and a stun gun was found in Cushing's apartment in Old Town.

According to court documents, there was friction between the Bolduc couple and Cushing because they refused to go along with his plan to leave school to visit a friend in London and go backpacking in Europe.

Police had immediately described the Wednesday night fire as suspicious and the state fire marshal's office said Friday that it was deliberately set.

Investigators said fires were started in the kitchen, hallway and basement stairway of the Cape Cod-style home and a melted plastic gas can was found on the kitchen floor.

Cushing had been staying with relatives in Lincoln County and was arrested after being brought to the sheriff's office in Wiscasset for questioning. He was being held in the York County Jail pending an initial appearance Monday in Superior Court.

Cushing was a student at the University of Maine but had taken the semester off while living in Old Town.

Christopher Bolduc operated two novelty shops near the Old Orchard pier in this summer resort town, which has a year-round population of 9,000. The family lived in a fairly new residential neighborhood near a golf course, and Carol Bolduc was president of the neighborhood association.

Administrators at Old Orchard Beach High School, where Josh Bolduc was a freshman, planned to open the school Saturday to enable students and parents to meet with grief counselors.

I just do not understand what is going on in this world these days. I can not fathom what would cause this young man to kill his family over something so trivial. There is just too much anger in this world today. Just too damn much.

. .i agree Happy Angel, and what is it with all the fires in Maine ? i live about 7 miles from some active lava flows here in Hawai'i, and we have our pyromainiacs, also, [ no pun intended ], but this out of control anger has reached new proportions, it seems. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all concerned with these problems, damitall. .. . .)=>*

I agree with all of you. It is ridiculos what is happening to all of us. It seems to me since they took prayer out of school and let kids do as they please everything has gone out of control

My husband and I bought NASCAR diecast from Chris at Blustery Day and knew both him and Carol. We still cannot believe this has happened. How very sad and unfortunate for Chris, Carol and Josh to have their lives ended so suddenly and in such a violent manner; and as Happy Angel said over something so trivial. God be with the Bolduc's. My thoughts and prayers are with their family.

In my day, kids dropped out of school and headed to Europe with just the clothes on their backs and actually WORKED their way around the continent. The accused is 22 year old, legally an adult. He didn't really need his mother's and step father's OK to drop out of school and bum around Europe. Sounds as if he wanted money from them to bankroll his trip and they said "No." So he thought he could inherit it and take his trip?? He won't be going anywhere, except to jail, now. What a sad situation...for all concerned, the victims and the perp, too.

JIM, you hit the nail on the head. Our generation has done many great things but if there's one thing we should be ashamed of is the way we've raised our kids. Alot of us have said that we're not gonna do what our parents did to us...well, maybe we should re-think that, huh?

Excellent points Jim and Bulldog. I see so many folks today with their kids and the kids have no respect. And the way some talk to their parents! I never saw that when I was a kid. We respected our parents...even if we did get mad at them. And I look back today as I head for 50, I'm thankful for how I was raised. I can not imagine how this family felt as their child/brother killed them. May they rest in peace and may God Bless all their family and friends.

its not the world these days, its just that there is more people and more media coverage.tell me how safe it was 300-400 years ago even 100 years check your history these times are actually a lot more civil.im not saying this is acceptable its very sad .

Jeff, I disagree. Our children have become de-sensitized to violence due to the nature of movies, books and, especially, video games. I would be interested to know if the accused perp spent a good portion of his formative years plugged into a vidiot box learning the finer points of maiming and killing.

Jeff - I think you're definitely right. Times actually are more civil now, believe it or not. It's the information age now so these things aren't more & more common... they're just picked up by media outlets all around the country & world.

Times are more civil now? I would have to disagree. I do agree that things are more picked up by the media though. But as far as civil..I think there is so much frustration, so much anger in this world today. And the way people deal with it, violence. If someone ticks them off...a death often times results. I recall a few years back a kid killed a family member as they fought over the TV remote. Look at all the road rage...someone loses their job and then goes in and shoots up the place. This world is far from civil, it's downright frightening now.

Well maybe we shouldn't be so civil? If people were held accountable for their actions instead of blaming others we would be better off. Every time someone does something wrong they have add or are mentally imbalanced or something

Tragedys like this were far less common 400 years ago for sure. He admitted to the crime so quickly because he expects to be let off the hook, with less than a life sentence I'm sure.

Good point Sam...in this day and age, if you fess up to your crime...they credit you for that bit of "honesty" and give you either a plea bargain or less time in jail. This young man killed his family, his flesh and blood...he's a cold hearted killer. There should be no plea bargain,no less prison time...he should spend the rest of his life behind bars. Too often...actually it seems...all the time, people are let off the hook to easily and too soon. If this crime took place in another country...this young man would most likely pay with his life.

Thank you for the facts T...but when I see them...it is still frightening. They are still too high! I agree with your point on prayer and school. I don't ever recall praying in school...which is neither here nor there. There is just too much anger and its being dealt with violence. And as its been stated in these blogs..the perps are let off too easy. There is no longer doing the time for the crime. There is violence being advertised everywhere these days. On TV, in movies,in books, in video games. It has gotten to the point if someone just cuts you off in traffic...the result..road rage. I stick by my words..."There is just too much anger in this world today. Just too damn much."

If someone confesses and if someone is caught red-handed by eye witness or video why should there even be a trial or why should we support them foe any length of time? If they were hanged would they do it again?

Why was he able to buy a stun gun? Can anybody just buy them? Is it something that is common? I just don't understand that at all.

The fact that a son killed his own mother, the person that brought him into this world, loved him, raised him, hopefully taught him right from wrong, and he killed her. Unbelievable. What a sad, sad story. He should have the same done to him.

..uh..well..civil war is a non sequitor, latin for non sequence, (or does not logically follow). Wars have never been civil. Suicide is selfish. Violence begats violence. Any other good ideas out there in Maine land ¿¿¿ " Maine Violent Crime Rates (1960 - 2006) have increased from 1 per 3,354 to 1 per 866 with Aggravated Assault showing the largest increase. " Our thoughts and prayers go out to the pepetrator and any one even remotely connected to him, Alo'ha, Steve Dosh
