RUMFORD - Some of the girls in the Class B classical race at Black Mountain hadn't even finished the race when members of the Yarmouth ski team broke out the boom box.
The girls stood in a circle, danced around and sang along to a Miley Cyrus song, creating a festive atmosphere around the finish area.
And they didn't even know if they'd won yet.
As it turned out, the celebration was with good reason.
The Yarmouth girls scored just 24 points in the classical race Saturday, seven better than rival Cape Elizabeth and enough to erase the six-point deficit that stared them in the face at the beginning of the day.
By one point - 59 to 60 - the Clippers earned the Class B nordic combined title and started a charge that resonated through the rest of the team.
"One of the best days in the history of the Yarmouth ski team was today," Yarmouth coach Bob Morse said. "Both the boys and the girls were down in nordic, and both came back to win. That was very impressive."
Yarmouth's big win in the classical race also earned for the school the Class B overall title, the school's second in a row and fourth in the last six years.
Not to be outdone, Yarmouth's boys' team - which started the day down two points in the Nordic competition to Caribou - posted an equally-impressive win, earning just 29 points to better Caribou by 15 on the day and by 13 for the week.
"I told the boys, 'The girls just won the nordic title, not to put any pressure on you,'" Morse said with a laugh. "'You guys have to respond.' And they did."
The Yarmouth boys also won the Class B overall title for the third straight season. "It's a senior-laden team, so it's a good way to go out," Morse said.
"I lose 50 percent of my scoring. The first three skiers in every event are all seniors, so next year it's back to rebuilding."
For as many overall titles as the Yarmouth boys (11) and girls (9) have won, the teams had never won back-to-back titles together, until Saturday.
In the overall, the Maranacook boys finished second to the Clippers, 90 points back, and Fryeburg was third, 42 points behind Maranacook. On the girls' side, buoyed by their alpine win, the Mt. Abram girls finished second overall, 47 points back of Yarmouth. Maranacook finished third, with Fryeburg taking fourth.
Yarmouth also swept the Class B skimeister awards. Jack Gross took the boys' title by eight points over Lucas Mathers of Presque isle, and Julianna Lord edged Mt. Abram's Erica Luce by three points in the girls' competition.
