Police dogs become liability issue

Friday, February 29, 2008

PORTLAND (AP) - Three police dogs that work for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department are being confined to their kennels while off-duty.

The issue of liability arose when Jag, a German shepherd, bit a newspaper carrier in Auburn in 2006, leading to a $7,500 claim against the dog's handler. The deputy was shocked to learn that the county insurer and his own insurer wouldn't cover the claim.

Sheriff Mark Dion has ordered the county's patrol dogs to be placed in professional kennels while off duty until the liability issue is resolved.

The handlers who rely on the bond with their dogs aren't happy. Sgt. Stephen Lathrop says it's an "emergency" that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

Maybe the dogs need better training. It doesn't seem that if properly trained they would attack anyone unless commanded to do so.

Well the police suck at everything else they do. So what makes us think they'd be any better at training a dog??

You failed to mention that the idiot delivering the mail went into the porch that said BEWARE OF DOG!!! I say she should be sued for waking up the dog. This is nuts for the postman to get any money? She should be fired for trespassing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"unkown" that is a ridicolous thing to say! Without the men and woman on the police force we'd be worse off than we are! What do you have one to many DUI's or speeding tickets? It's generally the people who are constantly in trouble with the law that has a problem with them. I for one thank the police depts. yes some are better than others but that is in every profession. What was the newspaper deliver doing by the house? Most houses have boxes at the end of the drive to put them on. The big BEWARE OF DOG sign should have given her a clue not to go up there.
