Newsday to eliminate 120 positions
Saturday, March 1, 2008
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) - About 120 positions are being eliminated at the Long Island newspaper Newsday, its publisher announced, citing poor advertising revenue.
The cuts follow recent reductions at other newspapers owned by Tribune Co., Newsday's corporate parent, including the Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun, The Hartford Courant and the Chicago Tribune Media Group.
"We're disappointed that such a high number has to leave our ranks," said Zachary Dowdy, a Newsday reporter who is vice president of Local 406 of the Teamsters Union.
"Our primary hope is that everyone who leaves has a safe place to land."
In a memo to Newsday workers Thursday, Publisher Tim Knight said some of the 120 employees would leave immediately, while others would remain through March. The cuts represent about 5 percent of the Newsday work force.
"Though we all know we will not grow by cutting, we have no choice but to respond to the revenue decline and make cost adjustments now," he said in the memo.
Dowdy said he was told about 25 positions would come from the editorial unit and 24 from the pressroom, and five drivers would be eliminated. He said the remainder would involve either management positions or nonunion employees. The union jobs will be eliminated through voluntary buyout offers and, if necessary, layoffs.
Newsday Editor John Mancini said newsroom assignments to adjust to the staff cuts would be announced shortly.
The cuts echo recent staff reductions at other newspapers around the country. Two weeks ago, The New York Times announced it was cutting 100 jobs from its newsroom, and the Times' parent company has cut jobs at other properties.
