CLAREMONT, N.H. (AP) - The sister of a man who was struck and killed by a passenger train last week loved to walk and had traveled throughout most of the state on foot.
Douglas McGuire, 57, died Friday night when he was struck by an Amtrak train headed from Washington to St. Albans, Vt. His sister, Darlene McGuire, said her brother was a loner who lived in a group home for people with cognitive disabilities and loved to walk.
"You never knew where you would see him," she said. "It was very common for him to be walking any time of the day."
McGuire wasn't employed at the time of his death but had worked at mills in Claremont and Newport, said his sister.
"He was an all-around nice guy. He was pleasant (and) he liked to joked with people," she said.
Police from Claremont and Newport and the Sullivan County Attorney's Office are investigating the accident. Amtrak has its own police force, which is working with local police.
McGuire's death was the second fatality train fatality and third accident in New England in two days. On Thursday, a worker checking train tracks was struck and killed by an Acela train just outside the Providence, R.I., station.
