LEWISTON - A woman was strangled in her apartment at 101 Birch St. and her son charged with murder Monday, police said.

Police said 47-year-old Debra Audet's sexual relationship with her son and daughter-in-law may have led to her death.

Investigators said the son, 22-year-old Matthew Audet, called them shortly before midnight Sunday to report that his mother had stopped breathing.

An autopsy Monday revealed that Debra Audet, who was suffering from cancer, had been choked to death. Her son was arrested after he was questioned by Lewiston and Maine State Police.

Police who went to the tall apartment house near the corner of Bartlett Street found Debra Audet dead inside the second floor apartment she shared with Matthew and his wife.

Matthew's wife, 19-year-old Kayla Stevens Audet, told police she had seen Matthew strangling his mother on a mattress on the floor.

"Kayla described Debra as lying on her back ... and her skin looking pale," according to an affidavit written by State Police Detective Jennifer King. "Kayla said Matthew was above Debra with either one or both hands on Debra's throat."

According to the affidavit, Kayla was preparing to leave Matthew, and the pair had argued about it earlier in the night. After she saw Matthew strangling his mother, Kayla tried to leave the apartment, she told police.

"While Kayla was in the bedroom gathering her things to leave, she said Matthew came up to her and said, 'I killed my mom, I killed my mom,'" according to the affidavit.

Police interviewed Matthew and Kayla Audet and someone who lives on nearby Bartlett Street. In the course of those conversations, they learned that Matthew had been having a sexual relationship with his mother dating back to when he was 8 or 9 years old, according the court document.

That person also told police that Debra had been having sex with Kayla, Matthew's wife, as well. Kayla later confirmed to police that she had been involved in a sexual relationship with her mother-in-law, according to the affidavit.

Police said the relationship between Kayla and Debra began when Matthew joined the Army, from which he was recently discharged.

Matthew had argued with his mother earlier in the day about her sexual behavior with his wife, according to the affidavit.

Police said Matthew told them he had been drinking with his mother on Sunday night at the apartment. They drank beer, Night Train wine and Mad Dog liquor. Matthew also said his mother began yelling at him, reminding her son that she had cancer and might die soon.

According to the affidavit, Matthew admitted going into his mother's bedroom around that time to "calm her down."

"Matthew said he held his right hand on her neck for approximately 30 seconds," police wrote in the affidavit. "Matthew then left his mother on the mattress in her room and went into the living room."

When he returned to the bedroom a short time later, Matthew told police, his mother was not breathing. He called police and initially told them his mother had choked herself.

At 101 Birch St., neighbors described a turbulent relationship between Kayla, Matthew and Debra Audet. Debra had recently been undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer but had stopped in recent days, according to a woman who lived above them.

"I talked to her just yesterday. She said she wasn't on chemotherapy anymore, that she was feeling better," said 22-year-old Heather Hudson, who lives above the Audet apartment.

She said there were arguments from the apartment downstairs, but that she never saw indications that Matthew was mad at his mother.

"Every time I saw him with his mother, they were drunk and laughing and having a good time," Hudson said. "I didn't think that anything was going bad between them."

Other neighbors said the Audet apartment was often the scene of partying and that things often got loud there.

"You could always hear them yelling like crazy," said Tom Taylor, who stays with his girlfriend on an upper floor apartment. "They'd stay up until four o'clock in the morning and stuff like that."

The troubled relationship between Matthew and Debra Audet is documented in the courts, as well. Last May, sheriff's deputies went to a trailer they shared at 12 Poplar Drive in Poland after receiving a report that the mother and son were fighting. When they arrived, police found Matthew behind the wheel of a Saab and his mother standing nearby.

Debra had a cut on her forehead and her son was drunk with a knife hanging from a chain around his neck, according to court records.

At the time, Matthew was on leave from the military. He admitted that he drank a bottle of vodka with his mother and was later charged with driving while intoxicated after failing a sobriety test. His blood-alcohol level was later measured at .26, according to court records.

In subsequent days, police were called again to intervene on a dispute between the couple. Matthew Audet was charged with violating bail conditions at least once. In November, he was convicted of drunk driving while the violating charge was dropped.

It was believed Debra, Kayla and Matthew Audet left Poland for Lewiston when they were kicked out of their trailer. Neighbors guessed they had been living on Birch Street since November.

Court records reveal a minor criminal record for Debra Audet. In 1999, she was found guilty of filing a false public report and paid a $75 fine.

According to the affidavit, Matthew had been working sporadically on jobs assigned by Labor Ready. On his MySpace page, Matthew lists V.I.P as his place of employment. His only posted message on the page states: "I love Kayla." Kayla is also the only friend he has listed.

On Kayla's MySpace page, she describes herself as "in love with the man of my dreams." In a questionnaire asking if she has ever cheated, she responded: "Once."

Matthew Audet remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn Monday night. He was expected to make his initial court appearance Tuesday morning.

What is going on in this world? This whole situation, from day one, has apparently been sick and troubled. It's no wonder it ended up with someone being killed.

Weird this comes on the same day and the Poirier sentence. Watch how different the two types of posts are. And really what does there Myspace pages have anything to do with this? Is that really this guy's only source of information.

Happy Angel, I agree. Sounds like the only relationship that mother had with her son came from a bottle and sexual. How sad....Clearly this mother was a very sick person and I am not talking about the cancer.

Perhaps the wrong drugs are legal. How many alcohol related deaths are there from alchol compared to the illegal ones.

It isn't odd at all that the article appeared on the same day as the Poirier Sentencing. Is there a conncection that on the day of the Poirier sentencing no college or school shootings were reported? ONE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OTHER. Keith, "me thinks thou doth protest too much."

My first reaction to this is that I am very, very angry at Matthew's mother for the many years of abuse she subjected him to. How can anyone do that to their own child? I am also very sad for Matthew. My heart goes out to him. I don't blame him for what he did. I don't believe that he intended to kill her. I hope that he receives love and support from someone to help him through this tragic event. He needs it.

I don't believe that alcohol or any other drug has anything to do with sexual behaviors or molesting ones child.

The comparison to both cases is we'll never have the alledged molester to confront or try to prove their guilt or innocence. Both took the law into their own hands under extreme emotional stress.

To contrast......Scott took a life to mitigate the abuse.....this boy took her life and it doesn't say really why...The article only said the sexual relationship had something to do with it. (probably the argument.)

I don't think killing anyone is okay...but I can imagine how messed up Mathew really is. He started having a sexual relationship with his Mother around 8 yrs old it states. I can only imagine the brain washing his mother did to him for it to continue all these years. I do have some sympathy for him. He grew up being messed up in many ways. Now as for his wife having a sexual relationship with his Mother...what the hell? As I said,I don't agree with murdering anyone. But I do know from experience how brainwashed you become once you are victimized. This world becomes scarier each passing day.

Alan, dude get your crap straight... we in Poland dont dump our "FREAKS" into lewiston the dumb asses didnt pay there rent so there for they gotta go! So they chose Lewiston, big shocker there! I think it would be the other way around of Lewiston dumping there freaks out in the country! I am sorry but the legal drug ALCOHOL, never made me want my daddy!!!! good god! If you ask me they allllll Knew better. Kayla started this relationship when she was what 17-18 and she didnt know better give me a break ... they are all sick and they should all be locked up! So sad she got killed, but in the same instance she wont be able to hurt small children again, and be thankful she went painless, cancer could have made her suffer like she should have....

I agree that if Kayla saw this killing taking place, why not do something? Try to stop it? Call the police? Isn't this considered being an accessory to the crime? And this whole event or the people involved has nothing to do with what town they live or lived in. I don't understand why these kind of things always turn into an issue of the town the event happened in or where the people lived. Every town, every state has murderers, rapist, child molesters,druggies..you name it.

This is all starting to make some sense. I have know Matthew since elementry school. He lived down the street from me and was in the same class as my younger brother. There was one day where matthew was caught by the neighbor having sex with their young daughter that was at least 2 years younger than matthew at the time..he was probably 10 years old at the time...it was all pretty weird. I didnt hear much from matt after that until he was about 15 or 16 and drove his mothers car into a snowbank outside our house, he was smoking and was a nervous wreck, it was all very odd. I havent seen matt in a few years, maybe 2 years afterward when he came to visit with a mutual friend, he seemed pretty strung out and weird. I feel bad for matt, maybe if that girls parents would of reported the incident maybe the police would of caught the abuse earlier and this would of never happened. I am shocked and saddened and a little sick about the whole thing. Matt was always a good and funny kid. This is all so disturbing.

Katie you got IT!!!!!!!!!! This ill behavior is every where you can't help it. Un fortunately this people never had the help they needed. I grew up in down town Lewiston and yes it's alot worse now, however the people living there could change the view for that particular area if they all got HELP!!! No I don't live there anymore however no matter where you go our world is becoming very sick and twisted. My heart goes out to Matthew as he needs healing and deliverance from all this pain and hurt. We don't know Kayla maybe she came from a simular back ground and that's all she knew as well. Unfortunatel when you are taught from a young age that these thngs are okay then you begin to believe this is the true way of life. It's unfortunate that Matthew never had the chance for a normal life. Unfortunately his mother probably had the same life growing up. This is why it's so important for our future generations to get a grip on this type of life style that unfortunatel was never dealt with years ago. It was always hush about it, if you told you were the disgrace not the perpitator!!! SO SAD for Mattew and Kayla.

No, the article seems clear that the police got confirmation from the principals involved, just wondering how much the neighbors knew and when. Is this another case where someone outside the situation knew, and reporting it might've forestalled a greater tragedy?

this guy never said he killed his mother because he was molested the article said it....I almost wonder if he realized how sick his situation was. The article alse eluded that maybe he was upset with his mother not for having sex with him but for having sex with his WIFE! I hope this lady rots in Hell.

There goes Black Hawk again with his perfect grammar and ignorant input, you can see his choices as a teen carried out its consequences.... Heather is right....he killed his mother after drinking and a fight....not to prevent further abuse. He is a 22 yr old MARRIED man who CHOSE to live there as an adult! Im sure he had problems if these allegations are correct....but he is an adult now!

I have to say this is truely a very bad story here. You have to wonder though why some of the local police officers choose to run there mouth at local small stores while getting coffee.I heard some of them were making some sick jokes about this story "Like keeping it in the family" and "Three's Company" and "Poland"? Why do that show some class here. Police are suppose to uphold the law not run the mouth and make sick jokes about something that happened.
