PORTLAND (AP) - It looks like Portland is going to come up just shy of the 100-inch mark for snow.

Maine's biggest city needed only six-tenths of an inch of snow to reach the milestone. But Art Lester from the National Weather Service in Gray says all of Wednesday's snow is melting when it hits the ground. And the snow is expected to turn to rain after dark.

The last time Portland topped 100 inches was three years ago when the city ended with 102.1 inches of the white stuff. The all-time record is 141.5 inches set in 1970-71.

Those numbers pale in comparison to northern Maine, where Caribou already has 171 inches. That's just 10 inches shy of the all-time high of 181.1 inches, set in the winter of 1954-55.

Rich Norton from the weather service office in Caribou says the record could be broken with another pending snowstorm, this one anticipated for Thursday.
