The new executive director of the Androscoggin Land Trust knows a thing or two about keeping busy.
Jonathan LaBonte starts in his new role as executive director of the Androscoggin Land Trust next week. But he's already a very busy guy. Look and see:
Name: Jonathan LaBonte
Age: 27
Hometown: New Auburn
Job: Executive director of the Androscoggin Land Trust
What drew you to it? The opportunity to engage with people and communities interested in priorities ranging from farmland conservation in rural areas to trail development in built areas. What other job could you go from working with foresters in Canton, to farmers in Turner, and then trails through downtown L-A?
What did you plan on doing as a career (i.e.; is this what you'd expected)? When I first went to college at UMaine to study chemical engineering, I expected to have a lifelong career in the paper industry somewhere in Maine, and more than likely a mill on the Androscoggin River. To some, these paths are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
So ... what kind of hours do you work? Long hours! I officially start in this role in a week, but I expect to spend some time in our office so people can walk in to see me (being in the historic Pontiac Building isn't so bad!) and the rest of my time out meeting with businesses, residents, civic groups and anyone else that wants to learn about how we can link conservation and the growth of our region.
How many cups of coffee? A few in the morning before work. A few in the morning at work. A few in the afternoon. And maybe one at night if I'm sitting through a city council meeting.
Family? My parents and older sister live in Auburn. I have grandparents in New Auburn and my memere lives in Lewiston. Its great to still be close to them.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? If you asked me that 5 years ago, I would not have described where I am today. For me, it is about finding opportunities to develop personally and professionally so I can improve the community that I am in. Right now, it's back in L-A trying to make it a better place and an attractive place for people to live, work and play. 10? I see myself still living in downtown New Auburn, surrounded by other young people that make this place home, with restaurants and shops that have located here and stay open past 5, and knowing that I will be able to walk or bike to get to most of my destinations because we encouraged business back to downtown L-A.
What do you do when you're not working? I like to follow local politics, even though my family and friends think I'm crazy. Although sometimes spending a Monday or Tuesday night at Gritty's can make for interesting entertainment. I should spend more time finishing the renovations on the first floor at my place.
Travel? I like to get out and about in Maine when I can. There is so much to do and getting up into the north woods with friends is a (good) summer escape. I have yet to become a world traveler, but I will some day.
Best stress reliever? It has always been a nice long run. The best way to clear your head is often getting outside and moving your two feet. With winter gone, I have some serious catching up to do! (And) a couple of cold mugs of brew at Gritty's with friends. It is a very close second. |
