Village planning session scheduled for Saturday

,
Monday, March 24, 2008

NEW GLOUCESTER - People are invited to attend an all-day workshop to plan the future of Upper Gloucester Village.

The event, spearheaded by the New Gloucester Land Management Planning Committee, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the AMVETS Hall on Route 100.

The workshop is open to residents and business owners.

Its goal is to help create a livable and compact village community that promotes everyday services and growth in an appropriate and safe area to help preserve the town's open space character.

Participants will work in small groups developing a master plan for the village. The plan will focus on developing a "Main Street" and identifying adjacent areas for residential and business uses.

The plan will address land uses, development densities, connectivity, public space and open space.

Groups will work through a series of exercises to develop a plan and present their proposals to the full assembly at the end of the day.

Town Planner Rebeccah Schaffner said a pre-workshop will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, at the AMVET Hall on Route 100.

That session will discuss the need for long-term planning of the Upper Village area, historic and projected growth and prior planning efforts will be given.

People will be asked to discuss their concerns and hopes for the future of the Upper Corner, which includes a section of Route 100 in the vicinity of the Post Office to below the blinking light at the intersection of Route 231 and Bald Hill Road.

To pre-register, contact Schaffner at 926-4126, extension 4.
