Logger stung by high cost of diesel

HARMONY (AP) - A logging truck operator plans to turn the repossession of three of his 10 tractors into a public protest against skyrocketing diesel fuel prices that he says are threatening to drive him out of business.

Donald Hayden, who plans to file for corporate bankruptcy, will meet with banking representatives Friday at the parking lot behind the State House in Augusta. Hayden says he will be joined by other truckers who are also struggling to make payments and buy fuel.

"They wanted to pick up the tractors here in my yard," Hayden said of the bankers, "but I persuaded them to do it this way by meeting them in Augusta, and they agreed."

Those taking part in the protest will include logging truck operators from the Coalition to Lower Fuel Prices in Maine and the Professional Logging Contractors of Maine.

The 58-year-old president of Donald Hayden & Son Logging says diesel fuel was $2.60 a gallon when he bought the three trucks in 2006. Now, he says, the price has reached more than $4.15 a gallon.

Hayden, who has been in the business for 35 years, said each of his seven trucks uses about 100 gallons per day. The fuel cost for one truck alone is now $700 a week more than it was two years ago.

Hayden, who has also been impacted by increases in the price of tires and parts, said he recently had to lay off three of the seven drivers he has employed full-time over the winter.

He said he would be able to keep some of the older trucks that were his and not the corporation's, which would allow him to continue to operate on a reduced scale.

"We're going to stay in business, although not as this company," Hayden said. "We are going through bankruptcy."

At rallies this winter in Lincoln, Damariscotta and Skowhegan, truckers held up their keys and promised to park their rigs because of the fuel prices. Hayden said one company recently abandoned its equipment in the woods and walked out.

"We're all in the same boat, including the people in the woods cutting the logs," he said.

This is when truckers should have thought about a savings.I'm sick of listening to them all complaining. These are risks.Maybe some of them should have thought about trying to hide all their profits. They go around with bif personal trucks and houses and suck the Mainecare system and when they have to pay out they sit here and whine whine whine .Hows it feel paying out? You know who I'm talking about those of you cheating.Back fired didn;t it?

Don't look now, but, the fraud is everywhere. Just down the road from me lives a guy who has worked for Maine State Dept. of Transportation for over 20 yers..His health care is covered by health insurance provided to State employees...his wife and 2 kids health care is covered by MAINECARE..Now, I don't know how anyone else does math, but, this adds up to the Maine taxpayer ultimately not only paying this guy's salary and insurance premiums through taxes ,but his wife and kid's healthcare,as well.. And you're worried about a logger? The Maine taxpayer is being abused from the State House on down...

The State of Maine in some parts is the biggest fraud there is.

Will you please explain how a meduim to large family today is supposed to have a SAVINGS? Put you glasses on, your hearing aid in and see what is going on in our lovely state of Maine. Operating costs (up-keep, maintenance, insurance, taxes, massive fines caused by ridiculous state weight laws and now our government and OPEC playing with extreme fuel prices).Where does the SAVINGS come from?

I cant believe there isnt more support on this blog for this guy. You guys think that all loggers are cheats wake up maine. Wait till you guys are paying $3 for a loaf of bread or $5 for a gallon of milk.. I quess you'll be complaining about the farmer who's hiding profits instead of the big oil companys who are causing this..Do you know it only costs the gas producers 53 cents to produce 1 gallon of gas. theyn make 61 cent PROFIT for every gallon. But you would rather pick on this logger. Wow I'm glad I dont sell fire wood.

Don't blame the oil companies. This guy had some trucks as corporate property and others as personal property. Now he plans to file corporate bankruptcy and keep doing business under a different name. It sounds like a scam to me.

How many people do you know who work from dark to dark, personally own and maintain their own equipment, pay their taxes and pay for their own medical costs have enough left over to HIDE. There is always one bad apple in every group. DO NOT group ALL truckers as being that shallow!!!

first of all...for those of you who aren't in the "know", this is a CAPITALIST SOCIETY. Oil companies are entitled to make a profit just like any other company. Instead of whining about fuel prices we need to find alternatives. Simple supply and demand people. Economics 101

Americans in general are selfish, piggish people. Heaven forbid any of us drive a car that's good on gas. We all want our big gas hogs and we don't want to find alternatives we don't want to be told to drive less or drive smaller vehicles. We are all pigs. Everyone is suffering from the high prices unfortunately some are suffering more as the truckers.

To PERSON: My husband has an incorporated business and we have business and personal assets. The reason for this is because ignorant lawsuit crazy people have no right to my home. Should something happen and we are sued we would still have our home and personal vehicles safe for our family. As far as someone's wife filling up and charging it to the business TOUGH... When was the last time you looked at what a business paid for taxes, maybe they need every write-off they can get. Logging and trucking pay some of the highest insurance and worker's comp. rates there are, did you think of that. If you have such a hard time with trucking then I suggest you start your own commune. The food you buy a the store was hauled in by a truck, the toilet paper you wipe your a$$ with was hauled in by a trucker. So if you are going to complain than fine. But go buy a cow for your milk and start using trees for TP. Yes I am partial to truckers I appreciate their hardwork, long hours and dealing with morons on the road who can't drive a car day in and day out.

You hit the nail on the head Tanya. Without these honest truckers, where would we be? I blame alot of this economic slump we are in on big corporate America. We all rely on fuel for our everyday lively hood. It seems as though our "ELECTED" officials care more about the rich and less about the hard working class people. Everything has gone up in cost and yet income hasn't. I agree that the state of Maine needs to do an overhaul on DHS and other offices. Hard working people who are struggeling can't get any help, but if you lay on your back and spit out babies you get free shelter, monthly income, food on the table, and healthcare. Let the truckers shut down for a day. Let's see what happens. No revenue from gas taxes might wake some people up.

Tanya as for you having a pity party for truckers go for it.As for me knowing that CERTAIN truck drivers cheating the system is NOT fair.I wish I could write off all I could but if writing off stuff that does NOT pertain to YOUR place of business is called CHEATING THE SYSTEM.I work 60 hours a week and my husband does as well and we DON'T get free anything so as I said before CERTAIN people are CHEATS and I know them and they who are doing this should be ashamed of themselves.

Person, what got you so defensive??? Someone call your bluff? I too am married to someone who works 60-70 hrs a week, I CHOOSE to work 30 so one of us can be home to spend time with our child. We can afford for me to stay home, but I have to work so we can have health insurance. Self-employed people do not get ins unless they pay insane premiums. We can go to Portland and eat out anytime we want and we do not charge it to the business as it is personal. I am going to Lake Tahoe in CA this summer for 2 weeks, but what does that have to do with the price of tea in China?? Nothing!!! I don't care about your trip to Portland, I hope you have a good time and enjoy yourself. Truckers are not the only ones who may CHEAT on something, how about a Doctor who goes to a conf. in Hawaii for 1 day and he and his family stay for 2 weeks and deduct that, is that legal? Life is not fair sometimes and you have to decide what you are going to do about it. Either deal with it and work to change it or accept it. Just complaining on here does nothing. We do not cheat on our taxes, but I have to pay in more than you make a year to just the feds alone......Unless you make over $250K a year, than I am paying in more than you make. I noticed you didn't mention buying a cow for your milk or using trees or leaves for TP. I am wondering if some people find it easier to complain and belittle others when they do not know the truth of what they say nor do they work on changing their own ways. One last thing, I am not sure if you know but using CAPS is considered yelling and rather rude... I find being polite works better and people tend to listen to your side better and more openly. Just some advice I thought I would share

Tanya um who cares what you make.I too have a awesome income!Farmers can cheat as well but do you see them at the state house with their head of cattle??? As for me making my life what it is I chose to be honest and I see life has cheats and cheats eventually end of on the losing end of things. Eye for an eye pal!!! This conversation seems to be a sensitive spot for you Tanya you cheat don't ya???

This is not a sensitive situation for me. You are the one who used caps and seemd to get bent out of shape. No I do not cheat on my taxes and we have survived a few audits very well. You don't care what I make just like I don't care about your trip to Portland. What I love about this country is people can agree to disagree and I think that is the point where you and I are at. I notice you still do not mention putting your actions behind your words......... Have a nice day.

Tanya I was using "the trip to Portland" as an example. Your not even wise enough to comprehend that get a grip and remember what comes around goes around Ms I make more money than you do your too funny!Good luck on your next AUDIT! I knew you was a cheat LOL

Person I think you need to remember what comes around goes around. I will survive the next audit and I never once said you were not wise nor did I call you a cheat or other names. I tried to stay respectful, too bad you could not do the same. So what goes around does go around. I chose to try to make a difference and not just sit back and complain. You still did not address if you were buying a cow for milk or what you were going to use for toilet paper??? I finally get it, you will just use all the products truckers provide for you and complain about them. Hope you can sleep at night.
