Judge sets bail for Hunt

,
Friday, March 28, 2008

PARIS - A judge allowed bail Thursday for a 27-year-old Oxford man accused of sexually assaulting a woman and creating a police standoff Tuesday.

Justice Roland Cole set bail for Kyle E. Hunt of 23 East Oxford St. at $25,000 cash or $50,000 worth of real estate at the recommendation of Assistant District Attorney Joe O'Connor. Cole also included conditions that Hunt refrain from using or possessing alcohol, illegal drugs, or weapons; that he have no contact with the victim; that he observe a curfew; and that he have a psychological evaluation and follow-up treatment as recommended.

"I'm trying to be cautious here," Cole said, "but also not to keep him in jail unnecessarily."

The Paris Police Department charged Hunt with gross sexual assault, burglary, violation of a protective order, criminal mischief and violation of conditions of release. According to O'Connor, Hunt broke into a woman's apartment and forced her to perform a sex act on him at gunpoint.

Following the incident, Hunt was arrested at his home after a three-and-a-half hour standoff with police. During the standoff, police say Hunt fired three shots with a Taurus .357-caliber Magnum revolver and threatened suicide. He was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway for an evaluation before he was jailed.

"They did identify some potentially serious psychological issues," O'Connor said.

Hunt was arrested by Norway police on March 11 on charges of terrorizing, domestic assault, and stalking. A temporary protection from abuse order was issued against Hunt on the same day, and O'Connor said a permanent order was issued Thursday.

Defense attorney Maurice Porter said Hunt has no criminal or mental history, and the allegations are an attempt to smear Hunt's reputation.

"It is our position that none of these things are true," Porter said.

O'Connor disagreed with Porter's assessment.

"The police recovered a handgun from his residence two days ago, your honor," O'Connor said.

Hunt remained in the Oxford County Jail on Thursday night.

Maurice better take of his rose colored glasses and look into the recent past. This man is crying for help. Examine his record for the past 4 months. If released without help someone will die. Wether it be him, his soon to be ex, or an officer. He has already proven that all these you can't do's mean nothing. As for plea them down and save me work Assistant D A O'connor you had better work a bit harder on this one. Kyle is a hell of a nice guy sometimes, but he is crying out for help give him the help.

Smear Hunts reputation? That's a laugh...like he hasn't done a good job of that himself. He shouldn't be bailed...period.

I hope the victim has had a chance to leave town and hide out.

Once again, does anyone get the complete picture by reading just a few articles? Does anyone know the "victim" or know that she was involved in an assault on Kyle's girlfriend herself? Kyle is a nice guy, and I am not saying that he does not need help. But as for the "victim" hiding out, maybe if she had been as poor and defenseless in dealing with these issues as she claims, the situation would not have gotten so out of hand.

OK, so she loves the drama. Does that mean he should be allowed to shoot her?

My point is that we are only getting a brief, edited, glimpse of the situation, and people are passing judgement on that, not necessarily the entire situation. How do we know he truly intended to shoot her? Because he had a gun? Because she says so? She has already proved that she has a flair not only for the dramatic, but for telling only "her side" of the story. No, he should not had the gun at all, I will agree. But I feel that people are not necessarily able to understand the situation without all the facts.

to my opinion aren't you doing the same thing.what because you know him you know the whole story.you with him all the time? no, so why is it you know all the facts because your buddy told you his side of the story.

to susan - I am not saying that I know all the facts. Am I saying the victim is a liar? Not at all. I am saying all we are reading is her accounts of the events, and there is more than one story. And for the record, just because I feel this way does not make him my "buddy" so to speak.

I do not know either of these people but I can not help but wonder if he gets out will he eventually kill her like so many other partners that do not want to let go. There is no excuse for threating or raping anyone.

Hey my opinion maybe the fact that he had a gun he threatened her the cops took it away and he was bailed with a no gun condition but purchased another gun would have some bearing on the fact the he intended to shoot her. Or do you only hear what you want to hear about the " NICE GUY "
