Dog survives on his own

LEWISTON - The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is caring for a dog that was found nearly starved to death after its owner died away from home.
The dog was found at home last week by a man who had gone to clean out his dead brother's Lewiston-Auburn area residence. Shelter officials believe the gentle mixed-breed hound had been alone there for up to a month.
"Nobody knew he had a dog," shelter Executive Director Steve Dostie said.
The dog was dirty, painfully skinny and so weak he couldn't walk and could barely stand. He was rushed to the animal shelter by the man who found him. Shelter workers rushed him to a local veterinarian.
"He was just a skeleton with skin and fur," Dostie said.
The dog weighed 28 pounds, less than half of the 60 pounds he should have weighed. He was so sick, officials said, that he would have died within two or three days if he hadn't been found.
The dog spent 24 hours at an emergency veterinary clinic, getting nutrition intravenously because his body was too starved to accept solid food. He has since started eating every two or three hours and has gained 20 pounds in the past week.
Because no one knew the dog's real name, shelter workers have dubbed him Anthony, after St. Anthony, the patron saint of domestic animals.
Although they don't know exactly how Anthony survived on his own for up to a month, shelter officials believe he may have had some food at the beginning of his ordeal, perhaps from a supply of dog food. They also think he found water at some point because dogs can live only about 10 to 14 days without it.
The residence - shelter officials believe it was an apartment - was in a shambles when the dog was found. It's not unusual for confined, starving dogs to eat anything within reach, including Sheetrock from the walls, Dostie said.
Citing privacy concerns, shelter officials declined to identify the dog's owner, the name of the family member who found him, or the town where the dog was found.
Little is known about the dog itself. Shelter officials believe he's about 7 years old and a mix-breed that may be part plot hound, greyhound or boxer. They also believe Anthony, friendly and outgoing, was not abused before his owner died.
"I think he was cared for because of the way his behavior is," said shelter technician Patty Allison, scratching the dog behind the ears while he wagged his tail at a child visiting the shelter. "He's a good fellow."
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society routinely cares for animals that have been abandoned in the street or in empty homes, but it rarely gets animals that have survived alone after an owner's death. Anthony's story has made him a favorite with shelter workers and visitors, many of whom read about his background on the shelter's Web site or on a note pinned to his kennel. A few people have already shown interest in adopting Anthony. Others have donated money to help pay for his medical care.
The shelter has spent about $1,000 on his vet bills so far.
Anthony will be neutered and put up for adoption within the next couple of weeks.
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society can be contacted at 783-2311 or through www.gahumane.org. |

I also suggest that you look research humane societies before putting out such a rude comment. Everything costs something today. You obviously don't have any pets either. Rude. May the owner who gets to keep Anthony realize what a strong dog they have!

Posted By:Mary at April 9, 2008 8:41 AM (Suggest Removal) This is a very happy story. This dog deserves a happy home, as he probably had before. I applaude the caring people that have taken care of him. It takes SPECIAL PEOPLE to devote their time, love, and money to care for helpless animals when they can't fend for themselves. A sad story to start but such a moving ending. What a loving pet he will be, hope he is adopted by a loving family he so deserves.

Posted By:y at April 9, 2008 8:43 AM (Suggest Removal) what a nice story but made me cry this am! i am so glad someone found this dog i also wonder if anyone heard his cries for help. PATRIOT your an A_ _. thank goodness for people that care about animals and make DONATIONS to animal shelters to help animals left behind from their families. PATRIOT im sure you have no pets and in my opinion you really do not deserve the friendship, companionship that animals give. with a cold heart that you have you probably will die unhappy and alone. god be with you....

Posted By:Hmm... at April 9, 2008 8:44 AM (Suggest Removal) I deal with folks like Mr. Patriot all the time. They believe that labor of any trade is not a "product" because they don't see anything physical. Construction people, shelter workers, health care folks, waitress people teenage lawn kids who mow lawns, it's all labor and we should pay them fairly because they're doing the job we don't want to do or don't have the skills to do.
Oh, and on the story above, it was a great one and thank you the the shelter for doing such a great job saving that dog and donating all their time and effort!

Posted By:My2Cents at April 9, 2008 8:51 AM (Suggest Removal) I usually tell this to parents regarding raising children but it is also true of adults... raising pets or being a pet owner teaches responsibility and COMPASSION! We all need more of that! As many of you also know having a pet lowers blood pressure and has a very healthy effect on our overall well being. That is why pets visit hospitals and nursing homes. They are a valued part of our society and their benefits outweigh their cost!
I think Patriot could use a pet but recommend starting with a turtle...they don't shed, take up space or even eat a whole lot. But they would stick their neck out for anybody!

Wouldn’t you just have skipped over it because it seems to me a heartfelt story wouldn't catch the eye of a heartless P.O.S.? YAH for Anthony – he’s so beautiful!!!

I can't believe nobody knew he was around: you'd think he'd of made noise or something.
I'm always a sucker for a happy animal story! Good for Anthony, I hope he finds a good home who spoils him rotten :)

Posted By:Concerned at April 9, 2008 1:05 PM (Suggest Removal) Notice Patriot1 doesn't have the galls to comment...that proves something right there. $1,000 is nothing. I would pay a $1,000 for a sweet dog anyday of the week, than fork over my tax dollars to the lazy slobs on welfare that won't get a job. No No...that would screw up my state check. Makes you proud, ah?

Posted By:Jamie at April 9, 2008 4:48 PM (Suggest Removal) I'm glad that Anthony was found. I myself, am a huge animal lover with three beautiful dogs. They are as much part of my family as the real members that are in it. As for you Patriot 1, I can tell that you've never had a animal because if you did...you would be more than willing to spend $1000 if not more, on making that animal well again. Speaking from experience... Thank you Greater Andro. Humane Society for being there when animals like Anthony need someone to care for them. This dog has a strong will to live and deserves to go to a good family and loving home so that he may live the rest of his life with a family that will care for him and treat him as part of their family!

Every spring about this time , we'd go out and look for the old Vets. in their cabins who hadn't checked in with us for a while . First , we'd look for footprints around the places. It's an indicator of life . We'd often find animals and the remains of the occupants within , tragic stories ; mostly . Alo'ha Steve

Posted By:unknown at April 10, 2008 4:51 AM (Suggest Removal) Patriot 1 must be a Republican. He sounds like a person who, as a child, always wanted a pet, but never got to have one. Poor guy. What a thoughtless person to make a comment like that.

Posted By:jes at April 15, 2008 11:49 AM (Suggest Removal) 20 years ago my cousin and I donated time at the SPCA in Auburn, an experience I am grateful to have had. Not sure if they still allow this, but it would be great if anyone out there has a child who loves animals.
***Also, my mom has been visiting Anthony daily and fallen completely in love with him. They lost there dog a month ago after 15 years, and their 19 yr old cat a few days later :(
They had no intention of adopting another dog so soon, but after visiting Anthony daily, my Mom and Dad have fallen completely in love with him. They hope to adopt him. I assure all you pet lovers, and Anthony followers, he will have the best home and SOOO much love :-) I'm getting teary. Go Anthony! I hope I get to meet you and I hope my parents are able to adopt you, you will be able to sleep on their bed, snuggle on the coach, run around in the back yard and play with all the Grandchildren!
