Saturday, April 12, 2008

FORT POLK, La. (AP) -A 23-year-old soldier from Maine died this week in a training accident at Fort Polk, La., officials said Friday.

The victim was identified as Spc. William Charles Koelsch III, who has family in Maine, said Maine Gov. John Baldacci. The victim's mother, Brenda Lee Koelsch, lives in Fort Fairfield and his sister, Lisa Koelsch, lives in Waterboro, he said.

The accident happened Wednesday, but details weren't immediately available.

Koelsch was assigned to the HHC, 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne). This unit is the "opposing force" used in training for units preparing to deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Flags will be flown at half-staff on the day of his funeral.
