On UMF campus, students, veterans rally 'round the flag

FARMINGTON - The healing began Thursday.
An art student's divisive social experiment - spreading American flags across the floor on Tuesday and asking people to either step around or on them - had created outrage among area veterans.
On Thursday, veterans were out-numbered by University of Maine students who joined them in support of Old Glory.
A crowd of 80 or more people turned out for a peaceful protest against the student and the University of Maine at Farmington, which sanctioned her project. Susan Crane of Auburn, a UMF senior, said she chose the social experiment to see how people felt about the flag.
Crane said Tuesday that it was difficult for her to place flags on the floor of the student center.
Vietnam veteran Charles Bennett of Farmington, the American Legion's 4th District commander, asked that the flags be picked up that afternoon. When threatened with arrest after trying to do it himself, he sat on one to prevent desecration.
On Thursday, Bennett stood across from the student center holding Old Glory, joined by veterans and many other supporters.
One, J. Dwight of Wilton, spoke to the crowd at Bennett's request.
"To allow a student to place flags on the floor as an artistic display shows contempt" for the sacrifice of veterans, Dwight said, "and a disdain for their beliefs. To allow the soles of shoes to tread on the flag is to allow the tread of Al Qaeda terrorists their fondest wish, and greatest Arab insult. This contempt deserves our rebuke."
Other people, however, supported the university administration for upholding the student's First Amendment rights, even while some objected to the method.
Some UMF students held a large flag across them. Many stopped to shake veterans' hands.
"I just feel this would be great to bring people together to show what the flag really means," said UMF junior Angela Courchesney, 21, of Jay. "I just feel that what happened the other day was a travesty and it's wonderful that people have come together to show their support for this country."
Freshmen Stephanie Peak and Katie Cook, both 19 and from Searsport, were there to support the flag.
"We just decided art is one thing, but putting the flag on the floor or ground is completely disrespectful," Peak said.
"There are certain things you just don't do," Cook said. "You don't yell fire in a movie theater. There are boundaries."
"Our dads are veterans, and it is part of who we are," Peak said.
"It hits close to home," Cook added. "They fought for us to be able to do that, so it's kind of a kick in the face."
Ron Smith Jr. of Temple served during the Vietnam era, and family members including two sons served in the military.
"(Crane) had the right to do this. I just feel she should have found another project. Nobody has the right to disgrace the flag," Smith said.
Robbie Kanner, a UMF junior from Fairfield, who stood on the display Tuesday, said the idea of Crane's project was to get a reaction as a social experiment, and it did.
"I'm still not too incredibly worried about standing on it. It was pieces of Duct tape in the formation of a flag," Kanner said.
The smaller flags were made in China, which bothered him more, he said.
"If it was a real flag, I would have been more cautious," Kanner said.
Ted Gill, 18, a UMF student from Yarmouth, held a large poster reading "God Hates Flags" on one side and peace and love symbols on the other.
"A flag is a symbol of a nation," Gill said. "The only power a nation has is violence to enforce its laws ... Because they use violence they're incompatible with Christian ideas ... I completely support administration in supporting the First Amendment."
Celeste Branham, UMF vice president for student and community services, said the university reached out to Bennett on Thursday and welcomed him.
"What's so amazing at this moment is how communal this event has been," Branham said.
"I think it was great," Bennett said. "Most of them were students and that's what I wanted. They have to live here. They are very patriotic."
Added Dwight in his prepared remarks: "That flag stands for freedom."
Joe Paradis of Industry said the gathering was a good show of support for the flag and the troops and to educate people about respect for the flag.
"It's not just a piece of cloth," Paradis. "I'm blown away by the number of college students. I've got renewed faith in this system." |

Her fiddle seemed to play a different tune when the reaction didn't seem to be so favorable. I did not call her welcoming at all when Mr. Bennett stood with his sign in the hall. I woud call her "two faced".

Yesterday, she welcomed him because he was using the amendment himself, which I find to be the biggest irony in all of this. What no one seems to realize is that this was all one well-crafted publicity stunt by the College Republicans. They are the ones who called the fire department, veterans, and news crew when they saw the project. It's quite a coincidence that a few of them are running for Maine State Legislature in November...

In a time that you wonder who really cares this showed that there are many, many people who do! This was a wake up call to many. Bravo for taking the step to try this project knowing that being ridiculed was going to be on the adjenda. Maybe people will take notice now when they see an old tattered flag hanging outside a home or business that isnt hung right, or taken in at night if not lit with the proper lighting. No one stepped on the flags and she caused an awakening...look at the brightside people!

What they don't seem to understand is that these were not flags, but representations of flags. I read a comment in another article on this the other day about people who have a 4th of July party with a cake frosted with a representation of a flag on which gets cut up and eaten. Where are the screaming citizens when that occurs, couldn't that be construed as desecration. The student had every right to do what she did and veterans should realize that they fought for her right to do so and should actually be proud of this student's social experiment. How many of them asked the student about how many actually walked around the flags as opposed to how many walked right over them. Those who were actually concerned about the desecration of the flags should have been there to educate those who chose to walk over them instead of berating the student. The student epitomises what a teacher should do for students, engage them and give them reasons to think, not just stand up in front of a class and lecture.

If you decorate a cake to represent the flag, once you cut it you are desecrating the flag. Check your flag protocol. As for the veteren who sat on the flag, in my opinion, he desecrated the flag worse than any student who stood on it because he of all people should know better.

America is supposed to the land of the free but most of the time that translates to free to do what I believe you should. We have lost our path to freedom by trying to define what freedom is to everyone instead of understanding that freedom is different for everyone.

The flag is a symbol of freedom and those who fought and died in honor of it. The motto "Don't Tread On Me." Came to mind as soon as I saw the first article on this issue. It's sad when young people do not have the understanding of what the flag means.

This is exactly what our country is supposed to be about: someone conducts an "experiment" to test the limits of our freedom. While she is allowed to conduct it, that experiment generates so much emotion that a group of people hold a peaceful, legal demonstration in protest of the experiment. No one on either side gets arrested or has their ideas suppressed. Congratulations, UMF and veterans alike, this is exactly how our democracy is supposed to work. Thanks for the fine civics lesson.

If you take the time to read His book, you'll see that God is all about law and order. Christ Himself said "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." It also says that "the powers that be are ordained of God", speaking of human government, and that we are to obey their authority. There is nothing anit-Christian about honoring or respecting the flag of our nation, or honoring and showing respect for those who have died that you and I might have the freedoms we enjoy, including freedom of religion.

Why was it all right for a peaceful protest, which I was happy to see, against this project but it was not alright for her to challenge us with the project. She made us think and learn and grow as a people. Isn't that what life is about??? We can't have it both ways - either there are freedoms we hold dear or there are not. I agree with John we don't have the freedom to divine someone elses as long as they are within the law. May God grant us wisdom and the freedom to love one another especially when we don't agree. They were willing to take the risk of execution for treason to stand up for their beliefs. Conservatives then would have argued that the Patriots should have been punished for their disrespect for the Union Jack. Conservatives today use the flag as an excuse for mindless patriotism. Has our nation become so weak that we cannot tolerate the freedoms we say we stand for, including one student doing an art project? Are we so insecure that we fear allowing her to express her ideas, even if we disagree with those ideas? Voltaire said, "I do not agree with a word you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." That's what this nation is built upon, not "my honor is loyalty." (SS Motto).

First, the video clip that is being shown on YouTube is totally edited to look one sided. Media at it's finest. I do feel that students and staff should have been notified that this was happening and given a choice whether they wanted to enter the building and then be automatically involved in this project, but it was not my project. I am told that most students did not step on the flags, and the pictures of the ones that did were part of another project and were there to see who would say what to the fact that they were standing on the flag. Again, this was not noted in the press, just the picture of the student standing on the flag. I think people need to be careful before they make judgement calls on all the students at UMF. We as the public was allowed to see what the media wanted us to see, and didn't they get a story out of it?? I wonder if they realize the potential for trouble they have stirred up?? I am sure they don't care, but I am asking all who read this to take it all in with a grain of salt, and remember there were many more students in support of this veteran then were shown. My child commented it did allow open his eyes to different points of view, and although he may not have agreed with all he saw, he could totally understand how tempers got totally out of control when seen on the video clip being viewed. Remember, we see what we are allowed to see, and even that can be twisted.

To compare her project to an action befitting Al Qaeda is both irresponsible and ignorant. The men and woman of the armed forces do not just fight for the flag, they protect our freedoms, granted under law, to practice such social experiments. Those opposing it have very right to dissent, but to threaten to desecrate a loved ones grave is against the law, and again, ignorant. Those who would say that something like this experiment should not be allowed are missing the point. It is entirely within Miss Cranes rights under the Constitution to do this. I believe the flag is a sacred symbol, but under the rule of law this project is legal and should be recognized as such. I'm sure that we all believe that the KKK is wrong and an abomination within society, but they have rights protected under the law that allow them to say what they do. When we start to make distinctions about what types of language we are going to allow, we begin to tread on thin ice and expose ourselves to losing all types of free speech.

It shows that many people don't care much about the flag these days. Even our government. Years ago, the flag was to only be flown at half staff to honor deceased presidents, foreign officials, principal figures of the US Government or govenors of a state, territory or possession. Now, we fly it for every dead soldier, sailor who is killed. Why don't we just fly it at half staff every day? I understand that there are thousands of men and women who have fought for our country and died but we never honored them in previous wars (WWI,WWII,Korea,Vietnam) so why should we start now. It's a shame how one persons opinion can stir an uproar. Let's stop making mountains out of molehills and get back to the important issues at stake.

The disrespect of the flag was not as much by the student project, but by those who walked on it instead of around or at least asking if this was purposeful. I would have been tempted to pick it up or at least inquire as to why it was on the ground. And then we have the veteran who decides to squat on the flag...far from a patriotic move given he didnt want the flag on the ground, he guarenteed it could not be moved. I'm sure if he saw someone sitting on a flag at the beach he would have been mortified and outraged. Take it for what it is - a school project done exactly as planned and accomlishing the very goal the teacher set. The question is why would a teacher make such excpectations to cause controversy?

I feel it was disgraceful to display that flag or symbol on the ground for people to walk on. I have watched so many things happen in this world and all you do isw lay there and take it. My words were no more threatening than what she did. If that is the way you all feel about the flag, I am sure Obama and his cult will suit you all just fine. As for me, I'll not be voting him in this time.

"The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard. "
Since when has anyone followed these rules??.. You see the American flag put on everything now a days. It is great for commerce. I bet most people who are all upset about this "project" have at least one decorative item in their home of the American Flag. I have a flag, and I hang it proudly. I salute the flag, and say the Pledge of Allegiance. However, I don't think that a lot of things like scripture and the Constitution should be followed word for word. They were made for human interpretation.

For those who are all in an uproar about putting the flag on the ground and causing people think.. are you going to drive out every person who's religion doesn't permit them to pledge allegiance to the US flag?
I thought this country was founded on the fact that our "founding fathers" wanted us to have certain freedoms..

"....We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.."
And built upon that you have the Bill of Rights..
For those needing a history lesson..
"The Bill of Rights protects the freedoms of speech, press, and religion; the right to keep and bear arms; the freedom of assembly; the freedom to petition; and prohibits unreasonable search and seizure; cruel and unusual punishment; and compelled self-incrimination. The Bill of Rights also prohibits Congress from making any law respecting establishment of religion and prohibits the Federal Government from depriving any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. With this in mind... don't you think our founding fathers meant for us to have TOLERANCE and RESPECT for all others opinions and beliefs???
Yes, all of these freedoms are what our "Brothers and Sisters " have fought and died for.
We live in a country that allows us to believe what we wish. We live in a country that allows you NOT to support our troops, or NOT believe in our government. I'm not saying I believe those things should be exercised.. but it is your RIGHT. Our flag symbolizes our Nation. That is truth. The person who created this art project is within grounds of her constitutional rights. If you strip those rights from her because you don't like what she did to a national flag, you are removing what this country stands for.
I support our Troops 100%, (my father served in the Viet Nam conflict) I believe if you don't like how the government is doing, vote for someone who will do a better job.. and I believe in Education and TOLERANCE!
BTW - I'm not part of a cult or believe that Al Qaeda is acceptable..

The UMF College Republicans did not arrange the event but were there is full support because they are patriotic. Member of many clubs were there that day among the hundred or so people who participated so to suggest that the UMF College Republicans were behind it and it is correct that 2 of the members are running for public office, Could that possibly be because they care about the communities in which they are running and want to make a difference. I feel that Keith and Angela's presence was not related to their campaigns at all but rather their love for this country and what the flag stands for.

Posted By:Mary at April 18, 2008 10:58 PM (Suggest Removal) this student has the right to do this clzss project as planned. it is to see how us americans react and how we interupt this symbol. nothing was done to hurt anyone. i think the reaction speaks for itself. let this student conclude this project with these reactions. hope there is a story to follow in days to come concerning the results. nothing is shameful with this, it is the peoples comments that are shameful. the fact is that it was expected to draw a uproar concerning the american flag. come her the beneift of the doubt, we americans reacted maybe like she thought we would. maybe a good grade will be the outcome of this project and also us americans will learn from this. no one has the right to down any of this, we all have the right to make our opinions, this is america. nice to see a student let us americans share in this project.

The project may have been a success - too bad the patient died ! Poor taste is never acceptable

The pure and simple truth: she had the right to lay anything she wanted on the ground. She had every right to do this project. The point was to make people start talking about how they felt about the flag, and it did. Morally, some people may not do it. So don't. You have to right to not participate in it. But you have the RIGHT to decide. Would you rather that right be taken away from you? It wouldn't be just the flag, you know.
