FARMINGTON - A former Franklin County man was sentenced to serve two, one-year terms concurrently Monday after he pleaded guilty to burglary and tampering with a witness or informant.

Five other charges against Craig Cowper, 29, in the two separate cases were dismissed in an agreement with the state. Cowper is serving a one-year sentence in a correction facility in Middleton, Mass.

Justice Michaela Murphy accepted the pleas and sentencing agreements at the annex of the Franklin County Superior Court in Farmington.

Cowper, formerly of Stratton and Coplin Plantation, was indicted in 2007 on burglary charges in connection with entering a Wyman Township home on two occasions, Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson told the court.

If the case had gone to trial, the court would have heard testimony that DVDs, a wallet, $32, sneakers, a bong and other items were taken. The victim would have testified that he observed a text message on his cell phone that stated if the owner wanted the wallet to contact him, Robinson said.

In a second case in 2007, pertaining to the tampering with a witness, informant, juror or victim charge, a relative of Cowper's was cooperating with police in relation to the burglaries, Robinson said.

The court would have heard testimony that Cowper threatened that relative by stating "that if he spent one day in jail because of her, he would find her and kill her," Robinson said.

The victim told Cowper the call was recorded, but it wasn't, Robinson said.

Murphy ordered Cowper to serve two, one-year sentences to the Maine Department of Corrections. Those sentences will run concurrently with each other and concurrent with the one-year sentence he is serving in Massachusetts as of Monday.

Cowper told the justice that he has served four of five months of the Massachusetts sentence for a domestic conviction.

Once he completes the latter sentence, he will return to a Maine prison to serve the rest of those sentences, Robinson said.
