Potato farmer in foreclosure

Thursday, May 1, 2008

PORTLAND (AP) - The federal government has gone to court to foreclose on land owned by a long-time Aroostook County potato grower.

In a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Portland, the government asks that land owned by Kendall and Jana Shaw of Fort Fairfield be sold to pay debts totaling more than $447,000.

Kendall Shaw, who could not be reached immediately for comment, is a former board member of the Maine Potato Board and president of the Maine Seed Potato Board.

The complaint says the debt stems from loans to Shaw's family dating back nearly 25 years. The loans were later secured by real estate mortgages and promissory notes held by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

How about a little farm aid here? We are going to see a dramatic increase in foreclosures coming up when every little town does reevaluations due to increased budget concerns. I think we need to learn how to tighten the belt a little rather than forcing people out of their homes and livleyhood.
