Downeaster may expand in Maine
Tuesday, May 6, 2008
AUGUSTA (AP) - A bill enacted during the final days of the Maine legislative session sets up financing to extend the Downeaster passenger train, which now runs between Portland and Boston, farther into Maine.
The legislation, signed into law April 23, authorizes financing of a $30 million federal loan over 25 years. It allows some of the daily round trips between Boston and Portland to go farther into Maine, with stops in Freeport and then Brunswick.
Passengers going to Brunswick could then transfer to an excursion train that runs seasonally to Rockland, with stops in Bath and Wiscasset.
With gas prices continuing to soar, Downeaster ridership is up substantially over last year.

Every industrialized nation has a heavily subsidized rail system which lessons their dependency on foreign oil. This is why European gas taxes were high, to discourage the use of oil and to sudsidize public transportation. Hopefully we'll do better in the years to come.

The SUV folk don't like that idea. Passenger rail? They just think waste-not-want-not is liberal commie drek. Maybe now they would like to sell their gas gulpers. Good luck to them!
We need a grand commitment to 21st century infrastructure. This will not come with greed pig-out mentality. This will only come through sacrifice. We can't retool our nation by borrowing money from China from now until kingdom come. Wake up America or we are all through!

What auto users need to realize is to travel to Boston that its far more cost effective to drive to Portland park the vehicle and catch the Downeaster to Boston and use the T to get to their destination, with huge savings made on gas and parking.
James you need to realize that its not Communist Governments in Europe that have ensured that rail infrastrure is such that it moves people and freight far more efficiently.
For instance you can travel faster using a high speed train from downtown London to downtown Paris than flying by air.
All due to the fact that Governments saw the need for investing in good rail infrastructure.
The expansion of the Downeaster service to Brunswick is well overdue.
As for rail services from Oxford I can see it happening but maybe a Bus service offering connections to the Downeaster Service in Portland is something that could happen sooner.
Clearly the patronage to date on the Downeaster makes a strong case for its extension to Brunswick

Start your own company - oh wait, what, you say you can't make any money because nobody will ride it! Easy fix we just pass a law that says you have to ride it, oh wait it's not going where your going, too bad you'll go where WE tell you to go when WE tell you to! Why is it Liberals/Progressives always want to force other people to do as they want? If you want to walk, bicycle or crawl on your belly, us Conservatives say go right ahead nobody's stopping you! Liberals/Progressives spreading misery equally.

I'd even ride in an SUV so that it would have more than 1 person riding in the gas hog. How is it that technology has given so many people a cell phone and computer power has reduced its footprint incredibly, but so little progress has been made to increase mile-per-gallon since OPEC was organized in the early 1970s? Consider that when at the polls.
