AMS Drama Club present Romeo and Juliet
By Cristina Lewis

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
William Shakespeare once again visits the Auburn Middle School stage on this May when the Auburn Middle School drama club presents Shakespeare's classic romance, Romeo and Juliet.
In fair Verona, Italy is where this tragic play is set. The Montague and Capulets are two families that dislike each other. Romeo (a Montague) and Juliet (a Capulet) meet and fall in love. Secretly Romeo and Juliet would meet to be together, then decide to be married. Controversy follows and the end result of this play is the death of the two star-crossed lovers.
The members of the AMS drama club have been rehearsing, building, painting, learning to fence, dance and working very hard to present this show. Duncan Gelder and Haley Barton will be playing our lead roles. With a little help from the Nurse (Nika Faulkner) and the Friar (Alec Bonang), Romeo and Juliet finally were able to be together. Ashley Dublois will play Mercutio, a man's part. In Shakespeare's time men would dress up as woman, so we decided to switch it around a little. Mercutio is clever, a little crazy and loves to talk about himself. There are nearly forty students in the entire cast & crew, and it takes everyone doing their best to put on this terrific show. This is a play that is known by all and a must see for those who love a tragic story.
Our play is going to resemble that may have happened in the Globe Theater from Shakespeare's time. It will have somewhat of a bare stage, but with pillars, a few props and colorful costumes. We built a thrust to our stage, too. That took a lot of work, and help from some awesome parents. Hancock Lumber, Lighting Concepts and Joy & Hamilton , Archatects have also helped us a lot with this show.
Our performances are going to be on Thursday May 15th at 7 p.m., Friday May 16th at 7 p.m., and Saturday May 17th at 2 p.m. at 7 p.m. in the Auburn Middle School Theater. Tickets will be $5 at the door. All are welcome and we hope to see you there. For more information, please call director Liz Rollins at AMS (784-1356) |
