Two area nonprofits are partnering to prove that small change can have a big impact. During May, the Abused Women's Advocacy Project and the YWCA of Central Maine will seek support for A Mile for Mom, a fundraiser designed to collect a mile, or more, of quarters to support programming at both organizations.

The goal of the campaign is to raise $16,600, the total amount that a one-mile long line of quarters represents. Individuals can support A Mile for Mom by donating a single quarter, a foot of quarters ($3), a yard of quarters ($9) or any amount they wish.

A Mile for Mom collection cans are located at merchant locations throughout Auburn and Lewiston. Donations can also be mailed to YWCA of Central Maine, 130 East Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240 or sent on-line by visiting: www.AWAP.org and clicking on "Give Online."

To see what a mile of quarters looks like, visit the YWCA gym from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31. The quarters that are collected will be on display.

The advocacy project has been providing advocacy and support services, prevention and education and an emergency shelter for those impacted by domestic violence in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties for more than 30 years. The YWCA of Central Maine has offered programs and services to improve the lives of women, teens, children and families of all faiths and backgrounds for more than 125 years.
