The Ramada Conference Center played host to another Chamber of Commerce "Not Your Normal Formal" Friday evening, May 2.
An international theme had folks showing up in anything from business attire to colorful garb from foreign locales, with Japan, China, Thailand, Somalia, Ireland and India just some of the faraway locations inspiring outfits.
Kirk Lalemand of Next Level business coaching was dressed in a Japanese kimono and brought his daughter, Madison, who chose a purple frock from India.
"I was a karate teacher for years and spent 18 months in Okinawa," said Lalemand, who has authentic kimonos at home that were too valuable to wear out.
"I volunteered at a women's shelter in India," said Madison. She described her time in that country as both "intimidating" and "fantastic."
Lalemand and his daughter won the $5000 cash prize later in the evening.
The winner of the best dressed category, judged by applause, was Heather Rideout, owner of Filebusters, whose clothing was from northern Thailand.
Early in the evening several tables were set up for silent auction. Items included cleaning kits from Procter and Gamble, a basket of goodies from Gritty's, green fees and golf packages from Poland Spring golf club, an exercise monitor, wine baskets and David Footer prints.
"I always have a great time," said Candace Sanborn, managing partner of Encompass Marketing. Sanborn bid on an exercise monitor and believed she may have been the winning bidder at the time the table was closed.
People turn out in high numbers every year to network and get to know other business owners.
"It's so invigorating to see all these business people out socializing and enjoying being here - really reinforces that buzz that is Lewiston-Auburn," said Andrew Harris, executive director of L/A Arts. "I don't really know anyone, so coming to this event helps me get to know local businesses," said Ed Michaud, co-owner of Fox Ridge golf club.
A live auction was entertaining to watch as people bid on several donated items, from an advertising package with the Sun Journal to a Great Falls balloon ride with Walter Crites.
"It's a nice social event that brings the chamber and business together," said Rick Cloutier, Lewiston-Auburn airport manager. "The chamber does a lot of nice things in the community."
The formal is another opportunity for community members and business owners to network, much like the monthly breakfasts and business after hours events.
