PARIS - Drivers involved in a head-on collision on Route 26 just south of the KBS Building Systems plant escaped serious injury largely through the use of seat belts, police officer Nate Bowie said Tuesday.

"If either party hadn't been wearing their seat belts it would have been a different story," Bowie said.

The collision occurred about 8:50 a.m. when Scott Austin, 27, of Lisbon dozed off at the wheel and his 2005 Ford Focus drifted from the northbound to the southbound lane. Austin's car collided with a 2001 Chevy Silverado pickup truck, driven by Krista Daniels, 52, of West Paris.

Both vehicles were totaled in the accident, Bowie said. He said the airbags deployed, but seat belt use was the primary reason neither Austin nor Daniels were injured.

"A lot of people think an airbag is going to save you but an airbag doesn't always keep you in the vehicle," he said.

Bowie said police closed a portion of the highway from Phillips Road to Old Route 26 for about 90 minutes to clear debris.

Finally!! A cop gets off the broken record of attributing an accident to 'speeding' and states a real truth about imperfect automotive technology! Maybe its great in a head-on, but once that thing starts deflating, the airbag isn't helping you any longer. Not many accidents involve a single hit without some subsequent spinning, skidding or rolling over. Buckle them babies up!!

I have no problem wearing a seat belt but do have a problem with an out of control government that forces them upon me. It is might right to decide if I want to wear a seat belt or not and my right ALONE! The government has no business telling me what to do. Our freedoms are disappearing people how much more are you going to put up with?

G. you may not have a problem with wearing your seatbelt but a lot of people do. The only reason THOSE people actually do wear their seatbelts is because it's a law. Laws are created to protect people, not infringe on your right to decide whether or not you want to be stupid by not wearing one. You can still choose not to wear one, you just have to pay the fines if you get caught. We always have the ability to choose our own actions.
