Phillips man dies in crash on motorcycle

,
Thursday, May 8, 2008

AVON - A Phillips man died Tuesday night after the motorcycle he was driving failed to maneuver a curve in the S-turns on Route 4 just north of the Strong line.

John Tooker, 56, was southbound on the road on a 2002 Honda when the accident occurred, Franklin County Sheriff's Lt. Niles Yeaton said Wednesday.

Tooker, who was not wearing a helmet, landed on some rocks and received severe head trauma, Yeaton said.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department received a 911 telephone call at 9:23 p.m. reporting the accident, according to a statement issued early Wednesday by Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Tooker and a family member were traveling on separate motorcycles when the accident occurred, the statement said.

"Speed was a factor" in the accident, Yeaton said.

Deputy Kenneth Charles is the primary investigator and was assisted in the investigation by county Sgt. Steven Lowell and Maine State Police. Trooper Aaron Turcotte reconstructed the accident, Yeaton said.

The results of the reconstruction are pending.

A medical examiner was expected to determine the cause of death Wednesday, Yeaton said.

Tooker's body was taken to the Adams-McFarlane Funeral and Cremation Services in Farmington, the lieutenant said.

As a healthcare professional I know better than most that helmets and seatbelts save lives. With that said, adults in America have the RIGHT to make decisions for themselves, even if others view them as foolish. We have the RIGHT to decide to do things that may be harmful to our health or well being. Government stepping in and regulating one more thing that we do is not the answer. This is a tragedy, but big brother shouldn't tell us what is "best for us". Be careful what you wish for...you just might get it!

E: If you want a helmet, put it on! don't impose your views on others. RN: Thank you. I've responded to many MC accidents over the years. Some weren't pretty. I would rather die that be an invalid for life. It's my right to put that pot on my head or not. Don't pass laws to order me what to do... Regardless, my sympathy goes out to family of the man who passed away. Find comfort that he died doing something he no doubt loved.

John Tooker was a good guy who will be missed by many. Maine should have a helmet law. If we did, he might be alive.

Why do we have meat and cars inspected - to keep them safer for Americans, right? Government has a role to step in and require safety measures in construction and other areas of life. What are society's costs related to this accident? If he had no insurance and our taxes paid the bill, shouldn't we have a say in his risk-taking? My children wear a helmet riding around the driveway to protect them, motorcycle riders should have to also. Isn't that more in line with the seat belt laws?

My sympathy to the Tooker family. My comment to others is even if he had worn a helmet, chances are he could have been an invalid due to other injuries from this type of accident. I for one wouldn't have wanted this for my family should I be lucky enough to have lived. Wearing a helmet should be a choice. I do wear one, and always will, but it's my choice. Thank you.
