• There was an unusually large number of intoxicated men on the street Saturday evening and some of them appeared greatly interested in the Congressional contest. It was alleged that "wet goods" were being passed out freely Saturday night (for political purposes) and that it was not all gone Sunday. Sunday afternoon a quartet of intoxicated men walked up Ash Street, made loud talk to persons whom they met and turned down Middle Street. They were able to walk a staggering gait, but did not appear at all certain of their footing.

• Practically every room in the hotels of both cities have now been engaged for delegates who will attend the Republican district convention here on Tuesday.

50 years ago, 1958

• Auburn elementary schools, unless some unforeseen event takes place to change the plan, will close for the summer vacation at noon on Wednesday, June 11. This action was voted Wednesday night by the Auburn Superintending School Committee on recommendation of School Supt. Lewis E. Webber. The superintendent said that on that date the schools will complete the required 180 days of sessions.

• The Lewiston Health Department "shot" more than 8,000 persons in the past fiscal year and a lot of them were youngsters. The department's annual report notes that injections of Salk anti-polio vaccine led the list with a total of 6,406.

25 years ago, 1983

• An open house will be held at the U.S. Post Office facility in Auburn on Saturday, May 14, from 2 to 4 p.m., according to Auburn Postmaster Gerard N. Ouellette. The public is invited to attend. The open house is being held to permit viewing of the behind-the-scenes operation of the facility. It will also be an opportunity to get acquainted with the postmaster and his staff. Tours will be provided and refreshments will be served.
