Lewiston Rec offering lacrosse skills and drills

LEWISTON - The Lewiston Department of Recreation is offering "Introduction to Lacrosse: Skills and Drills" for children currently in first and second grades. The program will begin Sunday, May 18 and run weekly through Sunday, June 22, 2008. The course will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Simard/Payne Memorial Park (previously Railroad Park).

Fiddlesticks are required, and soccer cleats are preferred.

Instruction will focus on warm-ups, game etiquette, safety, ground ball, scooping, dodging, shooting, passing drills, facing off, positioning and teamwork. No actual games will be played. Bridget Cailler is the Program Director, and the Instructor is Moe Morin.

Fee is $30 for Lewiston residents and $40 for non-residents. Children must be registered by May 16 at the Lewiston Department of Recreation, 65 Central Avenue, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. FMI, call 513-3005.

River Valley Pitch, Hit & Run

RUMFORD - GRCC and Rumford Parks announce a Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run competition for area youths.

This is a freeprogram for boys and girls ages 7 to 14, designed to encourage youth participation in baseball and allow youngsters to showcase their pitching, hitting and running abilities. The winner will get a chance to compete in the state meet on May 31 in Bangor. State winners then will compete at Fenway Park on June 7 prior to the game between the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners.

In the competition, participants pitch at a designated strike zone target for accuracy, hit from a stationary tee for distance and run from second base to home speed.

This event will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 17 on the DARE Park fields. Pre-registration is required along with proof of age. Contact Bob Anderson at the GRCC, or Parks Superintendent Tim Gallant at Hosmer Field office for an application.

Auburn Twilight tryouts

AUBURN - Auburn's baseball team in the Twilight League will hold its tryout Sunday , ay 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Auburn Suburban Little League complex.

Tryout fee is $10. Jorin Bunyea of Central Maine Community College is the head coach. FMI, contact Bunyea at 346-1031 or Nick Caiazzo of Frozen Ropes Training Center at 878-2600.
