Reinforcing our own beliefs
Friday, May 9, 2008
I have been reading the ongoing debate about talk radio and television with great interest. It's like watching people try to decide which of two skunks smells worst.
So who is God? Hannity or Franken? They both tell the truth? They are both infallible? So we don't need to read the Bible anymore?
The purpose of radio and television is to entertain. In order to entertain, one must provide programming that people want to hear. Therefore, the programming must reflect the beliefs of the audience. In order to do that, the entertainer or station must twist reality to cater to the clientele that they are dependent on.
A few months ago I was watching Fox News. The newscaster stated: "In order to provide fair and balanced views, and in the absence of a person from the liberal side (I guess all 100 million of them were unavailable), I will present the liberal position in this debate." He then proceeded to state things as the "liberal agenda" that a 5-year-old would have been able see through.
Conservatives are not the only people to do this. Both sides distort the truth in the interest of entertainment.
I feel as though I am stating the obvious, and am surprised that people don't automatically realize this.
I guess the most important thing for some people in the world is to believe that they are right about everything, and anyone who reinforces that belief is unquestionably telling the truth.
How sad. Bill Giasson, Lewiston |

Keeping this in mind, much more makes sense, particularly talk radio with all its sensationalism in creating bad guys (one EITHER side!) for the viewer to hate and fight. Many in our society find this entertaining, and I find that sad. Don't we all want basic happiness for all humankind? Maybe not.

Posted By:MikeL at May 9, 2008 12:17 PM (Suggest Removal) Don't forget the newest addition to the list: Ahmadinejad. Yup, he's interested only in "basic happiness for all humankind" - as long as all non-Muslims, especially all Jews, can be happy being dead.
Of course talk radio is entertainment. So is talk TV, including all the alphabet network "news" programs. That's why the Fairness Doctrine is stupid and dangerous - it wants to regulate opinion. This space, printed or on-line, won't be left out.

They are hate speech profiteers and I understand there is a market for the likes of these two, just as there is a market for Springer and Povich.

Posted By:barbara at May 9, 2008 4:03 PM (Suggest Removal) Julie, I guess you must seem to think it's ok for Randi Rhoades of Air America to call Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferero F----- whores. She is one of the most vile left wing haters out there. Plus, you also forgot to mention the hate spewed by the Huffington post and the daily Kos.
You have never in your life watched Bill O'Reilly so how can you quote what he did not say. I watched him that night and that is NOT what he said. Go to his web site to get your facts straight.
I used to live in California myself that is why I turned Republican. I used to be a democrat all my life until one day I woke up and realized I lived in the land of the fruits and nuts. You are a follower indoctrinated by the left wing haters. You really must suffer it out by listening to both sides of the story before you make your comments. That doesn't mean you listen to Brian WIllams interviewing Barack Obama and chatting about his bowling scores.

Posted By:JulieL at May 9, 2008 6:51 PM (Suggest Removal) Of course I don't think it appropriate to call these accomplished women whores. I think Randi Rhodes is to the left what Rush, Bill O', and Hannity are on the right. And frankly, Bill O'Reilly gives me the creeps. After hearing about the book he wrote and the money he had to pay his young producer after sexually harrassing her, yuck how can believe anything that comes out of his mouth? Bill Clinton and Monica were in a consensual relationship. Bill O'Reilly was stalking the poor girl. He is just plain gross. All in the name of entertainment? The Huffington Post must have you in a dither Barbara. McCain is lying about voting for Bush in 2000 and Arianna and 5 other people heard him say he didn't.....liar liar pants on fire, calls his wife names, is old as hell, lost a large piece of his face from skin cancer, panderer of the year.....yup that's your guy.

Posted By:barbara at May 9, 2008 8:09 PM Did you accually hear the tapes Julie. I doubt it, you probalbly got it from move on or Arriana.
You are a young woman who is blindly led around by the nose by a bunch of haters. I think Arriana Huffington is the one that has you in a dither Julie.
By the way Julie,I have news for you dear, you too are going to get old one day. I am sure that the liberal mantra today is if your past 60 or if you happen to get cancer you need to be put down. I think your statments are downright vile, but of course thats all liberals can do is demean people to make themselves feel better.I only spoke the truth about Randi Rhoades and all of the above mentioned web sites. Posted By:JulieL at May 9, 2008 10:43 PM (Suggest Removal) Hey Barbara, "This brutal ordeal is now officially over, and I will never speak of it again," he said on his talk show, "The O'Reilly Factor." He settled with the woman once she revealed she had taped his conversations...sorry. There are lots of liberal older women i respect. We do not put anyone 60+ out to pasture. On the contrary, we need t be reminded of the sacrifices made in the name of the progressive movement. Arianna was once a Republican. Then her conservative husband came out of the closet and all hell broke lose.....

Kathleen Willey said Bill fondled and groped her against her will. Wrote a book on the subject. On and on it goes. As for Ariana she is a left wing fruitcake. She is just a bitter middle aged woman scorned about what happed between her and her husband. Pay back for her is spewing hate filled rhetoric about Republicans and has a following of left wing loons that hang on her every word. I think the woman is mentally incompetent.

Posted By:jamey at May 9, 2008 11:15 PM (Suggest Removal) Hey Julie. Bill clinton was married too! Doesn't matter if Monica said yes or not. He's a liar, cheater, and scum. How many affairs......17? dating back to his govenorship. Yet you hold him up high like some sort of God and Mccain is crucified for being suspected of an affair. Forget about Whitewater and focus on Mccain's age, or blemishes. These are the kind of "blind eye" bashing that send conservatives into a froth. Frankly, all politicians at that level are two faced fire salesmen/women for the devil. Anyone who truely believes Hillary/Obama/Mccain give a rats a#$ about us is an ignorant fool. On a side note julie, read Leanord Pitts article (todays columnist) from a woman who lived in the former communist soviet union. Excellent commentary on where liberal policies have lead us. I'm not referring to party lines, just an adjective for the policies...can't help it if most of these policies where and are supported by the majority of DEMs.

Posted By:JulieL at May 9, 2008 11:58 PM (Suggest Removal) I worked on both of Clinton's campaigns and although our country prospered while he was int he White House, I was upset about the lies. I honestly felt it was none of our business, (Ken Star was realy reaching), but I have never looked at him the same. That said, I wish he were in the White House right now and not GWB and company. Iraq never should have happened and he wouldn't have invaded iraq.....

And it is our business, actually, what the president does, considering he is the representitive of our country. The fact that a military man/woman is court martialed for infidelity and the commander and chief can screw anyone other than his wife? He gets to come out of churc on sunday with hillary and chelsy, holding the bible (bible showing for the cameras) and the rest of the week bang whoever? How about the white water business partener of Bill and Hillary who blew his brains out in a televised press conference because he was taking their fall? The list goes on. No I would not take that loser back, or for that matter his wife.

There was one guy born about 2008 years ago who did it pretty well , but even his parents got ticked off at him when he went to the temple to talk with the rabbis and didn't tell them where he was going . And yes , there are many truths . The true beauty of T V and radio is that you can turn it off or switch the station . Same with chat rooms and other fora . Hit the iggy button . Yeah , Garrett ; and discretion has always been the better part of valor Alo'ha *<=)

Posted By:Bill at May 11, 2008 9:45 AM (Suggest Removal) Thanks you sir. Just looking at the responses to my letter speaks volumes about why i wrote it. Between the Clinton bashers for 1990's behavior and the Bush bashers for the Iraq war we continue to look backwards. Those things happened. There are many problems in the world happening today and unless we open our eyes and minds we are on a collision course with a very different and hellish world for our children. How convenient that we can go from a statement that we need to recognize that radio and television distort facts to trying to figure out whether Bill Clinton or Bill O'Reilly is the bigger slimeball. It's indicative of the lack of intelligent discourse in our country. In many cases intelligent discourse is limitied to name calling and bashing.
As for your statements about the Prince of Peace he was both liberal and conservative and we had better start heeding his message. I'm not necessarily a religious man but there are some great moral teachings in the Bible that everyone should start to listen to.
Thanks again.
