Charge against Carey dropped
Staff Report
Saturday, May 10, 2008
PARIS - An assault charge against Seth Carey, the Rumford lawyer backing a pending statewide referendum on a private casino in Oxford County, has been dropped.
Oxford County Assistant District Attorney Joe O'Connor said the case had been referred to the Maine Attorney General's Office, where it was determined the case against Carey wasn't strong enough.
"The decision was made not to prosecute," O'Connor said.
On April 16, Carey, 33, resigned his position with the casino campaign as the charge became public. He also stepped down from his post as president of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises, the limited liability corporation he formed to own and operate the casino if it's approved by voters in November.
"I realize certain legal matters in my hometown could become a distraction to the casino referendum I authored," Carey said in a written statement at the time. "My goal was to get this issue into the hands of the people so that a vigorous debate could take place in the coming months."
The misdemeanor assault charge was issued against Carey on March 18 by Rumford police.
Police Chief Stacy Carter said Wednesday that he believed the case against Carey was strong but said it would be up to prosecutors to decide whether to go forward with it.
Carey still faces complaints lodged against him by two local attorneys and a judge alleging that he may have behaved unethically, violating the Maine Bar Association's Code of Professional Responsibility. Two of the complaints were lodged by former Rumford town attorney Jennifer Kreckel, who has since been replaced as town counsel by Carey's father, Thomas Carey.
Seth Carey appeared before the Grievance Commission of the Board of Overseers of the Bar, the sanctioning agency for lawyers in Maine, twice in April. The disciplinary hearing will continue Wednesday, May 14, in Portland.
Once the hearings are concluded, Bar counsel will take the testimony under advisement and issue a ruling. The counsel could dismiss some or all of the complaints, issue a public reprimand against Carey, dismiss the complaints with a warning, or make a finding of possible cause for suspension or disbarment.
Carey declined comment when contacted by phone Friday. |

Posted By:T at May 10, 2008 11:01 AM (Suggest Removal) I check the Rumford Reporter every day. It's very entertaining reading. Here are two quotes from an article posted by the Rumford Reporter Editor (Jennifer Stowell-Norris) yesterday: [#1] - "We'll be sitting by patiently waiting for the Sun Journal and the Rumford Falls Times to report that the charges against Mr. Carey have been dropped. Don't be surprised if it never makes it to print." [#2] - "Mr. Carey is our hero!

Posted By:T at May 10, 2008 11:12 AM (Suggest Removal) "you fools", you are absolutely correct. The Rumford Reporter headline is "Charges Against Local Attorney, Seth Carey, Dropped!". This headline is incorrect. Only one of the charges/complaints recently levied against Mr. Carey was dropped. I wonder if Jennifer Stowell-Norris will correct this error as the Rumford Reporter likes to portray itself as a legitimate news source. I know the Rumford Reporter editor reads the Sun Journal blogs, so we'll see. And oh, The Rumford Reporter has made some very serious allegations regarding the Rumford Police Department. I hope The Rumford Reporter can back up these allegations with facts. I'm not an attorney, but without facts these allegations seem libelous to me. Maybe I should consult Mr. Carey for some legal advice?

Posted By:sad at May 10, 2008 7:25 PM (Suggest Removal) Oh JN your biast is leaking all over you again. You are "sketchy". Women who are assaulted face this response often...it has to be some low life or it did not happen. This is your hero...My hero is the soldier lying in the dirt for twelve monts to protect our freedoms, the mother of 8 fighting cancer and still caring for her kids...So the police had to stop the same person and ask them to wear their seat belt twice and they were not very nice to the person who totally disregard the law. Oh somebody hold you both... I have never met a bigger cop hater than you and usually cop haters are criminals who hate that someone is enforcing the laws. Most law abiding citizens would not have so much venum. So to recap...you hate cops, firemen, med-care, Mr Eldrigde, Rosie, Mr Doar, Chief Carter specically, all police officers, at least half of the selectmen, You love love love Ron Theriault, Seth Carey is your hero, love love obsessed with Jason i want to be your selectman to I can talk more and make more of a fool of myself.... You love Lisbon even though it did not want you, Rumford....also did not want you....You love love love to interview yourself. Never interview anyone who you acuse of those things...oh yeah you hate that young officer who is leaving to be a Marine because he gave Ron T a ticket (Ron who you love love love) So I assume you hate Marines...you know cause 4 of Rumford's officers are Marines former Marines...anyone else...OH sorry hate hate hate Jolene....and other former selectman...Losts of hate. Get counseling. Carey still has charges pending and just because a 18 year old girl can not afford to fight a lawyer from a lawyer family doesnt mean he did not assault her. Even if she is like you and sketchy she is a person who has a right to say no.... Any more heros....their our some child abusers wanting a grouping. Please I pray get counseling.

A surging, seething, murmuring crowd of beings that are human only in name, for to the eye and ear they seem naught but savage creatures, animated by vile passions and by the lust of vengeance and of hate.

It is better, so the Fourth Amendment teaches us, that the guilty sometimes go free than the citizens be subject to easy arrest.

Posted By:Kelly at May 11, 2008 12:59 AM (Suggest Removal) yg you are an idiot. Nowhere in this article or in the facts is it implied Carey was not read his miranda rights. Since he is an attorney I doubt it is even necessary. So your quote merely shows you to be a pseudo-intellectual idiot. Using a high-minded quote that has nothing to do with your point. Nice to see one part of this witch hunt has ended. Hang tough Seth.

Posted By:sad at May 11, 2008 5:48 AM (Suggest Removal) Sandra you are an idiot you are referring to the 5th amendment of the right not to incriminate yourself. The Forth is about search and seizure so joint yg in the club. I would love to see if you are a non fact checking psuedo-intellectual as well? What is your vote? Hang in their Seth their are plenty of school girls who will not tell because they will know that it is hard to press a complaint about you. Sandra also all person's charged with a crime must be read their Miranda (a right written off the 5th amendment) and even if you are a lawyer who did not flunk the bar exam several times it would be necessary to read and document understanding of these rights. Look a new club member welcome Sandra!

Posted By:sad at May 11, 2008 11:28 AM (Suggest Removal) I think that yg refers to the fact of someone not digging into the facts how tough it is for officers to get the guilty convicted. I think that the Justice assures police that convicting guilty people is made difficult to protect those who are innocent. So Sandra you are in the club with JNS and her posey but I think yg can go on his merry way.

Posted By:T at May 11, 2008 8:46 PM (Suggest Removal) And oh, The Rumford Reporter has some breaking news regarding the Rumford Fire Department. Once again, the reporting seems libelous to me. Then again, I don't have the skills or knowledge of an attorney such as Mr. Carey. Please go to: http://www.therumfordreporter.com/ and read for yourself.
