A "Celebration of Excellence" was the theme of the first Central Maine Community College dinner held recently on the campus. Approximately 200 attended the event, which was sponsored by the college's Education Foundation board of directors.

Attendees had a buffet dinner served by students in the culinary arts program and the dining hall staff. The meal was followed by an audio-visual presentation on the college's history, growth and accomplishments, delivered by President Scott Knapp.

The highlight was the presentation of awards to 14 individuals who were noted for their achievements or contributions to the college. Each award recipient was given a limited edition framed watercolor of the campus painted by Lewiston artist Mercedes Gastonguay.

The following students were honored: Kyle Oliver of Auburn and Lisa Patton of Livermore Falls, for being named to the All-Maine Academic Team; David LaBonte of Lewiston and Tiffany Seams of South Paris, Male and Female Athletes of the Year; Danielle Hirsh of Lewiston, Scholarship Recipient of the Year; Rhyanna Larose and Asmo Dol, both of Auburn, "Against All Odds" Award; Debra Lyons of Oxford, Student of the Year.

CMCC Director of Maintenance Ray Masse of Lewiston was honored as the Staff Person of the Year. Faculty Member of the Year awards were given to Minot resident Donna Dancause from the graphic arts program and Gary Rattray of Lewiston, chairman of the math and science department.

Bob Gaudreau, '79, of Hardypond Construction in Portland, was given the Alumnus of the Year Award. The Corporate Partner of the Year Award went to Paul Coulombe of White Rock Distilleries, and the President's Award was given to David MacMahon of Maine Machine Products.

Due to sponsorship support, the event earned approximately $10,000 for scholarships. The mission of the Education Foundation is to provide financial support to Central Maine Community College and its students, to advocate on behalf of the college and to nurture relationships with the community and constituencies. The foundation also serves in an advisory capacity to help evaluate CMCC programming and course offerings.
