Training offered to combat violence, neglect against seniors

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

The Lewiston/Auburn Abuse Task Force is holding a free training for seniors called, "Are You Safe from Family Violence and Neglect?" The training is part of a series of workshops offered by the task force to address the risks of seniors becoming victims of scams and abuse.

The training will be held May 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the SeniorsPlus Office, at 8 Falcon Road in Lewiston.

"Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated in their tactics, and all older adults are more at risk for being taken advantage of or abused," said Connie Jones, director of community services for SeniorsPlus. "We encourage seniors, family members and caretakers to attend these trainings. Education about scams and abuse is the best weapon we can have to protect those we love and care for."

The series is being presented by the Lewiston/Auburn Elder Abuse Task Force, a group of concerned agencies and law enforcement that see the victims of scams and abuse in their work every day. The programs are free and open to the public.

In addition to the "Are You Safe from Family Violence and Neglect?" workshop, on Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m., there will be "Are You Safe from Scams?" and "Are You Safe from Sexual Assault?" on Nov. 18, also at 1:30 p.m. All workshops will be held at SeniorsPlus.

Registration is requested by calling SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241 or 795-4010.
