• "A fact of pleasing interest to the people of York is the announcement which comes this week that York High School has been officially declared a college preparatory school of the required standard. It has been approved by the New England College Entrance Board of Providence R.I., and hereafter its pupils will be admitted to all colleges of prominence in New England, with the exception of Harvard and Yale, upon certificate.

50 years ago, 1958

• WESTBROOK - Mr. and Mrs. A.C. LeBlanc were nothing if not surprised Friday when a fireman walked into one end of their house and informed them the other end was ablaze. The couple was completely unaware an oil burner flooded and burst into flames in their kitchen, doing $3,000 damage.

• Nine-year-old Stephen Muskie went on his first long plane ride Thursday. His father, the governor of Maine, took him along in an Air National Guard plane to Florida where Muskie will attend the National Governors Conference at Miami Beach. Steve will vacation at the beach with Mrs. Muskie, his 8-year-old sister, Ellen, and two grandmothers while the governor is in conference.

25 years ago, 1983

• WLAM and WWAV, two radio stations under the same ownership, received four Maine Broderson Awards for advertising at the fifth annual Broderson Awards at Portland's City Hall Auditorium Friday night. Ronald R. Frizzell, president and general manager of both stations, said he was very pleased about receiving the awards. He noted this is the first year his station entered the advertising competition and his station was the only radio station to win an award.
