CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A North Carolina middle school student faces disciplinary action after school authorities discovered a "hit list" with the names of other students in a notebook on Tuesday.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools spokeswoman said Thursday that a student at Bradley Middle School in Huntersville, N.C., reported that another student had a notebook with the words "Hit List" written on a page and four names listed below it.

School officials reported the list to school district officials and the Huntersville Police Department.

Huntersville Police Capt. Michael Kee said the seventh-grader admitted to creating the "hit list" but was not charged. Detectives are investigating the incident and will talk with the District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed.

"Anytime this occurs, we take it very seriously," Kee said. "But I don't think it was as bad as we had initially thought after talking with the folks involved."

On Wednesday, parents of the students who were on the "hit list" were contacted by the principal, Carol Owen. Parents were notified of the incident by the Connect-Ed system, an automated telephone message program, Wednesday.

School district officials would not say what disciplinary action the student will face.

Owen could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Linda Petry, vice president of membership for the Bradley Middle Parent Teacher Association, said she believes the school is safe and that administrators responded quickly.

"I feel like they handled it right," she said.
