B-ball buffoonery causes water damage

FARMINGTON - An errant basketball toss had two Main Street businesses on cleanup detail Thursday when the ball hit a sprinkler, setting it off in the apartment above the businesses.
Two men were playing basketball in their apartment above State Farm Insurance and Dunkin' Donuts when they struck a sprinkler head just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, fire Chief Terry Bell said Thursday.
Cory Saunders, 21, of Norway, and Matt Duffy, 22, of Windham, won't face police charges for their inside game, said a police representative, but the sprinkler system left the two businesses with water damage to contend with.
Eighteen members of Farmington Fire and Rescue responded to the call and used wet-vacs and pumps to help alleviate the water situation, Bell said. There's no way to tell how much water was released through the sprinkler or how soon the department was called after the deluge started, he said.
While waiting for an insurance adjuster to determine the amount of damage to the building, Kelly Sawyer of Portland, who manages the property for Stonecoast Properties, had crews from Puro Clean and RPH of Jay working Thursday to bring out ceiling tiles and trash resulting from the water damage.
The wall between Dunkin' Donuts and State Farm was of concern to Dunkin' Donuts owner Dan Sylvester of Farmington.
"It's the damage not seen within the wall and floors that is of most concern," he said, fearing possible mold problems as he took pictures of destroyed ceiling tile while customers came in for previously offered free iced coffee on Thursday.
Sylvester expressed appreciation for the job done by the Farmington firefighters.
"They did a great job. I was impressed with their concern and way they worked," he added.
Only one apartment of the four located above the businesses was damaged, Sawyer said.
Permission from the town to place a Dumpster within a couple parking spaces in front of the businesses was approved Thursday morning to help with the cleanup, the police representative said. Officer Edward Hastings of the Farmington Police Department investigated the incident. |
