LEWISTON - Central Maine Federal Credit Union has expanded its "Books for Kids Program" to include the award of $500 grants to schools or community libraries to conduct a summer reading program for children. The following were selected as this year's recipients:

Elm Street School, Mechanic Falls, was selected for its summer support program. The grant will enable the school to purchase personal subscriptions to a child-centered magazine for each student in the program.

A grant will enable Livermore Falls High School to extend its "Bagels and Books" reading program through the summer. The reading group meets to discuss books and have breakfast together. The program is designed to promote community literacy by drawing students, staff and community members to talk about books in a casual and supportive atmosphere. Each participant is given a copy of the featured book.

The Lisbon Library Department in Lisbon Falls was selected for its "Wings, Stings and Leggy Things" summer reading program, which will incorporate the children's garden, the Bookworm Bend Garden. The grant will enable the library to purchase individually selected paperback books for each child in the program.

The goal of Central Maine Credit Union's Books for Kids Program is to encourage children to read. Vicki Stuart, CEO, said, "We believe that our Books for Kids Program is a way for us to assist the community we serve by providing learning opportunities through reading."

Central Maine Credit Union is located at 1000 Lisbon St. and serves all of Androscoggin County.
