HART'S LOCATION, N.H. (AP) - Two hikers from Pennsylvania cut short their planned multi-day traverse of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains after they got off their trail and ran into snow depths of 3 to 5 feet.

Fish and Game Department Sgt. James Juneau says the two had started their hike on Monday and planned to hike through Friday.

A search-and-rescue mission started Thursday morning when one of the hikers made a cell phone call for help to the Appalachian Mountain Club.

The hikers, 19-year-old Gregory Pine of Newtown, Pa., and 20-year-old Robert Hogan of Langhorne, Pa., were in the upper reaches of the Dry River Wilderness. They said they were wet and cold and off the trail. One had lost a sneaker while trudging through the snow.

Juneau says Pine and Langhorne eventually walked themselves out to Route 302 and were relayed to the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch. Both hikers were in fairly good condition, although Pine sustained significant superficial wounds to both feet.

Juneau says the lack of snowshoes and appropriate footwear were significant factors leading to Pine and Langhorne calling authorities for help.
