POLAND - Gunfire was exchanged in the area of West Shore Drive on Tuesday afternoon with two bullets fired into the windshield of a Volvo.

State and county police who went to the area recovered a gun and found a man hiding in the woods at about 4 p.m.

Kevin Camp, 30, of Lisbon Falls, was removed from the woods and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

It was not clear who fired the shots into Camp's windshield. Police believe Camp was driving his Volvo into Poland around 3:30 p.m. when he became involved in a confrontation with the driver of a second car. It was during that exchange that shots were fired into the car, police said.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Department was investigating the shootout Tuesday night.

At about 3:45 p.m., sheriff's deputies went to West Shore Drive after receiving reports that a Volvo was being driving erratically with a pair of bullet holes in the windshield. Minutes later, the car was seen in the dead-end portion of the road and two more gunshots were heard.

When police arrived on West Shore Drive, they found the Volvo abandoned near the woods. They also found signs that the driver had fled into the woods.

Police called for a tracking dog, but Camp was found within minutes. Because of a previous felony conviction, Camp was prohibited from having a gun. He was arrested and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he remained Tuesday night.

While police searched for the gunmen Tuesday afternoon, they shut down portions of Schellenger Road and West Shore Drive, in the interest of public safety and to preserve the crime scene.

The roads were open again within two hours.
