Athletes of the Week

Girls: Lea Morin, Lewiston

Morin scored four individual event victories in five days for the Blue Devils. She swept the 100, 200 and 400 meters in a six-team meet at Lawrence on Friday, then followed with a 100-meter victory in the KVAC Under the Lights meet Tuesday in Topsham. Morin also placed third in the long jump at Mt. Ararat.

Boys: Kyle Huston, Lisbon

Huston had hands and feet in 36 points for the Greyhounds in their win over MCI, Mt. Blue and Messalonskee. He captured the high jump, ran the anchor leg of the victorious 4x100 relay and was a close second to Messalonskee's Erik Anderson in both the 100 and 200.

Guessing that Riley Masters and Mohamed Noor would finish one-two (or two-one) in the Class A 1,600-meters is a little bit like predicting that the Red Sox and Yankees eventually will end up in one of those two arrangements atop the American League East.

Their first encounter in advance of June's state meet did nothing to paint a different picture. In a head-to-head battle Friday at Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Masters of Bangor ran a flat 4:22 to top the 4:25.95 of Lewiston's Noor.

Not surprisingly, Noor and Masters bring out the best in each other. Both ran more than eight seconds faster than their seeded time in the event. Noor crossed the line 26 seconds ahead of third-place Sebastian Peters of Lawrence.

Masters won the indoor mile state title in February, with Noor returning the favor in the two-mile run.

Noor ruled the 800 meters in 2:03.47 at the Lawrence meet, leading a Blue Devils sweep of the top three spots with Matt Driscoll and Faisal Abdillahi. He sat out the 3,200, allowing teammate Sadam Abdi to shine. Noor saved his 3,200 kick for Tuesday night, posting a runaway win at 9:41.12 in the KVAC Under the Lights Meet at Topsham.

WALK HARD

Mention the racewalk and most local track and field observers will respond with Mt. Blue, Lisbon, Edward Little or perhaps Dirigo in the game of word association.

Leavitt Area High School is doing its part to put its stamp on that still-growing event. In last Thursday's meet at Brunswick, Emily Hunter and Ryan Fitzsimons swept the 1,600-meter events for the Hornets.

Hunter and Fitzsimons each topped the field by more than a minute. Fitzsimons' time of 7:18.23 was only 23 seconds off the KVAC record established by Adam Staier of Mt. Blue in 2001.

BEWARE OF THE DOGS

Lisbon High School continues to tune up for a run at dual Mountain Valley Conference and Class C championships by taking a bite out of Class A competition.

In a recent nine-team showcase at Cony that also featured Brunswick, Mt. Blue and Morse along with a flurry of MVC schools, Lisbon's boys landed second with the girls third. The Greyhounds lost out to Brunswick by a mere 19 points in the boys' tally.

Top performers for Lisbon included Cam Bubar, who won the 800 meters while placing second in the javelin and with the 4x400 relay team. Kyle Huston scored in four events, winning the high jump, running a leg of the second-place 4x100 relay and taking third in the 100 and 200.

Nate Blackwell won the discus. Tyler Campbell captured the racewalk.

Rebekah Sullivan highlighted the girls' achievements with victories in shot put and discus.

Lisbon's boys kept standing tall in the land of giants, defeating Messalonskee, Mt. Blue in Gardiner in their next meet.
