Theft victim shoots up suspects' pickup truck

VIENNA - All Joe Lord needed to halt a pair of theft suspects was patience and a shotgun.
The 66-year-old man blew apart a Ford pickup truck Tuesday morning and scared away the couple he said had stolen $3,000 worth of scrap iron, steel and aluminum from his machine shop over the weekend.
Taking aim after more than two days without sleep, Lord shot holes in the front tires of the 2008 Ford F-250, blew out the windshield and rear window and shot up the radiator.
"I disabled the truck," Lord said Wednesday. "That's all I did."
Disabled the truck, forced the suspects to flee on foot and gave police a big head start toward solving the crime, that is.
Investigators from the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office said they tracked down the driver of the truck, Elizabeth Evans of Mount Vernon. The truck is owned by her father.
The girl will be charged with theft, and charges are pending against an accomplice, said Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty.
Lord said that after watching his property on Kimball Pond Road for 56 hours straight, he would have aimed for the suspects themselves if he had seen them.
"It's not my intention to go around shooting people," Lord said. "But if they had been there, I would have shot them, no doubt about it. I was so exhausted."
Exhausted, but by all accounts a good shot with a 12-gauge loaded with buckshot.
Lord said he spotted the truck after returning to his shop for a third time Tuesday. It was parked there with a heap of scrap metal in the bed. "I didn't do anything until I knew what they were doing," Lord said. "When I saw my steel in the back of the truck, I knew I had to do something."
Lord took aim and the disabling of the truck began.
"I blew out the radiator. I shot the two front tires and the windshield. There was some damage to the back window, too," Lord said. "I put some pellets in the seat. They said I got the water pump and the power steering, but I don't know about that."
None of the shots landed in the body of the truck, Lord said, because that was not his intent. He simply wanted the truck to stay where it was, and that is exactly what happened.
And, there were no more thieves milling around his business.
"A 12-gauge shotgun is pretty intimidating," Lord said. "It echoed for about a quarter-mile down to the lake."
A neighbor showed up moments later and Lord told that person to call police. Sheriff's deputies were on scene shortly after. They searched the area with the help of a tracking dog, but the suspects were not immediately found.
The Sheriff's Office issued a statement about the incident, and the news of Lord's shotgun prowess spread far and wide. The news was picked up by newspapers and television stations across the country.
"I have a sister in Montana," Lord said. "She saw it in the Billings paper."
He doesn't care much about the attention, he said. He's just glad there are no more crooks hanging around his machine shop. He hopes police find the suspects and that others will think twice about pilfering someone else's property.
So far, just about everyone who has contacted him about the incident has thanked or congratulated him for a job well done.
"People are fed up with these thieves," Lord said.
Sheriff Liberty said he discourages the use of guns to protect property.
"I can understand the frustration that Mr. Lord must have been experiencing," Liberty said. But, he added, "We don't want to see anyone get hurt over property."

We usually end up saying something to sort of 'if all cashiers had a small gun under the counter, soon the robbers would get the hint that that isn't the way to get money'. I think what Mr Lord did was right...they were stealing his property..he did not ever intent to hurt or kill anyone...just their vehical. And boy, shooting out Daddies 2008 Ford truck...phew, guess Daddy will check on his little girls where abouts a little closer huh?!
GOOD JOB MR. LORD!

My father lost a 45/90 rifle,a 12 gauge shotgun,1 military rifle (not his own) a 22 pistol and a radio. That was back in 1983, called last year to see if I could get some serial #'s that my father had given them. Their comment was, Well that was so long ago I don't know where to start. I told them to start with Kirtley Woodcock 1983 stolen merchandise.
Yes I believe in protecting your property with a weapon.

Just about one of the most frustrating things is being stole from, makes you feel so violated. Now that dads 08 truck got it maybe that will be one parent who holds their kid accountable for her actions. Been saying for years that the reason we are in this shape as a country in general is because todays youth is not held accountable for their actions.

Shooting up such a new truck is a perfect way to get your point across. I wonder who will be held liable for the damage to the truck.

Posted By:Lew. Taxpayer at June 5, 2008 8:45 AM (Suggest Removal) It is sad to think that Joe will get sued by the owner of the truck for damages. He should fight it if it happens. What jury would decide in favor of the thief's father? People are tired of being victims and getting no justice let alone restitution. The law states that the state has to prove that the defendant has the ability to pay. Victims have no rights to challenge that decision. The police make a good attempt to help victims but the DA's office just want to deal it away and not bother with listening to a victim or have a trial.

As far as Sheriff Liberty goes if this happened a few more times these low lifes would think twice about going on someone's property and stealing from them.

But then again, according to Kirtley in the 6:07 post, the police and sheriffs dept. are far too busy to deal with crime. Maybe they should deputize Joe.
And if someone tries to put the blame on Joe for his actions, he should use the post traumatic stress disorder defense.

I dont think someone not having sleep in 56 hours can make a rational judgement and what if it would have been his daughter would he want someone shooting her? despite what are children do we love them and for someone thi think the dad's in on it too , lots of judging going on here. I think they all need time in a cell because if one of joe's stray bullets would have hit my child then what would you say , way to go joe....

Posted By:Rocky at June 5, 2008 12:55 PM (Suggest Removal) The truck was used in a commission of a crime, no need for Joe to worry about being sued. To bad Joe hadn't filled the two thieves asses with a few rounds of that buckshot. When this goes to court, a good Judge will give Joe the ownership of the 2008 truck, so that he can scrap that to compensate for his loss of scrap metal.

Posted By:Nancy at June 5, 2008 3:01 PM (Suggest Removal) What the sheriff meant was that using guns which could harm or kill people just to protect property is not a good thing and it isn't. No property is worth the loss of a life. No human being in Joe's family was in danger. I am glad he shot up the truck though, which was appropriate.

Posted By:Lew. Taxpayer at June 5, 2008 3:37 PM (Suggest Removal) You need to understand that the criminals have the rights. Very seldom do the DA's office care what the victim thinks or how much money or property has been taken. The criminal can not be forced by the court to pay restitution if he can not afford it!! That is a fact see MRSA Title 17-A Sec 1325 Subsec. 1.C and 2.D. That will open your eyes. If the criminal is unemployed and has no job skills the court can not order the restitution. So the victim like Joe is victimized yet again. MOst prosecutors do not even bother to let the victim know when the court case is scheduled as they do not want the judge to hear from them.

Posted By:Chris at June 5, 2008 4:11 PM (Suggest Removal) Pamela, Buckshot has a very short range. It is only really deadly within 25-50 yards. after that range it becomes pretty much useless and by about a 100 yards its falling to the ground and I assume that his neighbors aren't that close.
Thats why a shotgun w/ buckshot is popular home-defense weapon. you don't have to worry about it going through a wall and continuing into your neighbors house.

Posted By:Matthew at June 5, 2008 4:56 PM (Suggest Removal) That girl has a mom and dad. All of you, if you ever do me one favor, do this: Look into your hearts. You don't have to tell anyone the answer but yourself. Look in, and be HONEST. Not to me, to yourself. No one else will know.
Could you really look into her old dad's eyes, and tell him to HIS FACE, "yes, I killed your daughter because my property is worth more than your daughter's life?" Could you?
If you couldn't, congratulations, you are a human being.
So then, why would you even take a chance aiming a gun near someone unless your very life were in danger? Even if you meant to take out the truck, you might miss (Jacob, 00 buck will punch thick metal at short range).
If you answered 'yes' to my question and truly meant it, then I don't even know what to say to you. You already know you are a monster, and you already know you are miserable. Get help, or get out.

Posted By:james at June 5, 2008 4:59 PM (Suggest Removal) Though I don't encourage violence, I think it's high time that people wake up to the fact that firearms are for more than just hunting. Legitimate self-defense of one's life and property are totally legitimate reasons for having guns. Our criminal justice system is failing. Maybe not so much up here, but in other parts of the country, in part because of unscrupulous lawyers and certain liberal judges, as well as other factors. Hats off to this man-criminals need to be sent a strong message, and they don't always receive this from the justice system these days.

And for you bleeding heart liberals who think it is tragic that Joe might have injured someones poor little girl... Just be sure to teach your kids right from wrong and they won't get hurt. I was raised to respect the property of others and to work for the things I wanted. Not that long ago a couple kids forced their way into an elderly man's house up in Vasallburo and pistol-whipped him and pulled him out of his wheel chair and duct-taped him to his refriderator. Teenagers did that looking for money and prescription drugs. Fortunately the gentleman survived and the "kids" were caught. But you can be sure all they got was a slap on the wrist.
