Board member, road boss at odds over priorities

HARTFORD - Newly elected Selectman Jack Plumley had some ideas about how the roads should be addressed that differed from those of Road Commissioner Jeremy Johnson on Thursday night.
Plumley wanted Johnson to maintain the roads that have recently been tarred rather than doing other projects such as brush clearing. He mentioned several roads where cracking has occurred and said if this wasn't taken care of now, the roads would be lost.
He said all the culverts should be installed where needed. He also wanted the jobs to be put out to bid.
Johnson said it would cost $1,000 for him to take care of sealing cracks, and he thought it was a waste of time and money.
Selectman Hope McCabe motioned to table the issue until the Road Committee could meet.
Judy Hamilton reported on a workshop members of the Lake Committee had attended. It acquainted them with the 11 types of milfoil that grows in Lake Anasagunticook. Attendee Leslie Boness said milfoil is in Lake Auburn and can come into the lake via boats, fishing lures or anything that goes into the water.
She mentioned that the Dam Core Committee is raffling four Red Sox tickets for the Toronto Blue Jay game Aug. 16. Tickets may be picked up at the Hartford and Canton town offices for $5 each.
The board accepted, with regret, the resignation of Lynn Izzi from the SAD 39 board. The board asks that anyone interested in filling this vacancy call the town office.
Reappointments were approved for most members of committees whose term was up on June 30. |
