Fryeburg hosts annual bike rally

,
Monday, July 7, 2008

FRYEBURG - A state bike rally will make its home in Fryeburg the weekend of July 11 to 13.

The 20th annual Maine Bike Rally, which will run from Friday to Sunday, was chosen as this year's National Rally by the League of American Bicyclists. The event, which will be based at Fryeburg Academy, will feature more than 30 rides in western Maine and the Mt. Washington Valley.

The rides range from five to 100 miles and all depart from the academy. A lead and sweep rider will be assigned to each excursion, and a support vehicle will be assigned for rides of 50 miles or longer. Cyclists are encouraged to bring their own water, food and repair supplies, and helmets are required.

Events will include sunrise and stargazing rides, a bike art show, the BikeMaine Expo, a bike parade, a bike-in outdoor film, music, an ice cream social and a rally time trial.

Due to a sponsorship from L.L. Bean, local riders may participate in the rides for free, although they must still pay a registration fee if they wish to camp out. Bicyclists from Bridgton, Brownfield, Denmark, Fryeburg, North Fryeburg, Lovell, Stow and Sweden, and in New Hampshire, Bartlett, Chatham, Center Conway, Conway, East Conway, North Conway, Glen, Jackson and Intervale, may ride for free after showing proof of residence.

Registration for the full three days will cost $85 for members of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, $95 for nonmembers, and $30 for children ages 6 to 15. Registration for Saturday only will cost $55 for members, $65 for nonmembers, and $10 for children.

Registration includes camping on the academy grounds, and shower facilities will be available. Cyclists are encouraged to decorate their campsites, and the Best Dressed Campsite award will be given on Saturday. The winner will receive free admission for two to next year's bike rally.

Alcohol and smoking are prohibited on school grounds, and minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult to participate in the rides.
