NORWAY - Aaron Fuda led his contingent down the center of Main Street, sign in hand, a small bullhorn at his mouth and red fairy wings on his back.

"We smoke pot," Fuda informed the crowd gathered for Norway's 41st Annual Arts Festival. "We like it a lot."

Fuda led a blue van pulling a portable hot tub decorated with a giant marijuana cigarette and pro-marijuana signs.

A few friends soaked in the hot tub - mostly male, mostly topless. A topless woman joined them as they traveled east down Main Street, her chest screened from the crowd by the walls of the tub and her fellow protesters.

The float picked up a few more participants, including a more visibly topless Emma Donovan of Norway and a guitar player, as it made its way up Main Street to Butters Park.

The spectacle didn't elicit much more than a few grins, some laughter and cheers from arts festival patrons. Most stopped browsing among the water colors, pastels and jewelry to watch Fuda and friends pass.

Then, the festival-goers got back to the art.

It wasn't the reaction Fuda expected, he said afterward, shrugging in response to being asked what he did expect.

During the protest, he carried a sign that read: "Legalize Fudafest, In the Woods or In Town."

That's the crux of the protest - whether Fuda and his friends get to celebrate on his land on McKay Road according to their own rules. Town ordinances have curtailed the annual clothing-optional, pro-marijuana, anti-government Fudafest party for the past two years.

"The town keeps passing new laws to keep Aaron from having Fudafest on his own property," said protester Emma Donovan. "So, if they're not gonna let us do it on his property in the woods, then we're going to do it in town."

If Saturday's reaction was any indication, the group would get little opposition from townspeople.

"I think it's great," said Laura Wright from the Mill Street Catering Company. "This festival should represent everybody in town - and they're part of the town, too."

The protesters were even given a place on the arts festival's official schedule of events. They were listed under the "Performance Art" heading and given an official spot in Butters Park.

Organizer Aranka Matolcsy said the festival couldn't legally stop Fuda and friends from parading through town, so organizers chose to include them.

"I think there is room for us to work together," Matolcsy said. "As long as they don't disrupt the other artists, we don't have a problem. And they did a great job last year."

Having Fuda and his group in town increased media focus on the event in 2007.

"We wouldn't have had television stations out covering our little arts festival," Matolcsy said. "But they came last year, and a lot of people heard about us for the first time then."

Not everyone was happy with the Fuda performance art.

"I'm a grandparent, and I was going to bring my grandchildren here," said Karen Murphy of Norway.

"I don't walk around in front of my grandchildren or anyone smoking pot or topless. I'm mad at the organizers for allowing it to happen. You don't see this kind of thing at a festival in Florida or anywhere else. You shouldn't see it in Norway, Maine."

Anyone who really belives that marijuana should be illegal is ignorant. Not agreeing that this was the correct venue for this, but all of you "OMG POT IS ILLEGAL" types need to get a life and stop bothering people.

PAUL, I dont think your going to love me anymore. While I dont think they should be parading around town naked or displaying big joints for children to see, I do think marijuana should be legal. Tired, I'm certainly not ignorant. Sick people benefit greatly from pot and cant get it-thats ignorant! We are a society full of people popping one pill or another for attitude adjustment, some people choose to smoke theirs instead.

I love you FUDA!!!! He will never stop the fight. I can't remember how many times he has been arrested for him fighting for his rights and others. I believe he was arrested a couple years ago naked. I was at a Fudafest in Norway... back in the early 90's. Norway police raided a peaceful protest on private property. I remember seeing the swat team standing on top of the old bus that fuda lives in, with assault rifles. One year, they even tear gased the crowd and took a bunch of people away in the paddy wagon, for what. I still dont know. I stopped going to the festivals when I got older and got sick of the harrassment from the police. I had my car search one too many times. I will admit that I smoke pot. I'm also perscribed controlled substances for my panic attack. I rather puff a joint instead of popping a pill. I've always said that. SO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK FUDA!!

I see why Grandma could have been upset. Otherwise let this citizen do as he likes on his property. In not condoning illicit drug use, my opinion is leave these people alone. The government for years has picked on "pot", in order to hide the fact they can't win the war on drugs. But there again, if I were law enforcement, I'd rather take down a crowd of easy-going folk than the ones involved in any number of "hard" street drugs. Might get shot up. Also Americas newest #1 problem-Rx meds. So, if that's all this "Fudafest" is about, then Fudaway!!

I bet everyone of those people are high school drop outs, work mim wage, or on foodstamps and addicited to drugs besides pot or something and they live in the woods and have no teeth. And their kids are going to be the same way, never going anywhere and doing nothing with their lives generations after generation. I will pray for all of them, you people who smoke pot everday need to get a life. You will did one day and look back on your life and it will be a small funeral that the town will have to pay for cause you didn;t buy life insurance, and yeah good luck with that, you all need Jesus

I agree with Jeff....I have some pretty hot friends at University who are studying Biochemical engineering, who smoke pot everyday and manage to maintain their 3.8 GPA. Not all tokers are dumb, toothless, nothings. Get a grip. If you really were as close to Jesus as you'd like people to believe, you'd be more accepting and compassionate toward those less fortunate than you and not judge people based on their socio-economic status! Wasn't He a friend of the poor, ill and less fortunate? Pretty self-rightous of you to make supositions.

Wish Fuda would have put his passion and energy to better use and fight the good fight. Instead he is just a spectacle and will never be taken seriously. It's this type of behavior that continues to give pot a bad rap.

I personally don't care what people do on their own property as long as it doesn't affect me. I don't want people to tell me what I can and can't do. However as a mother of 2 children I think it was wrong of the women to go around topless. Yes you couldn't see one but you could the other. I'm with grandma I certainly won't be taking my kids to the art show this year if this is the type of "art" that is going to be displayed. You want to do it, do it on your own property, don't force it on the rest of us.

Jesus what a bunch of fools, the bottom line who cares just shouldnt protest at a function such as that where families are there to enjoy their day and whay the nudity. Many kids there and many older people all they did was ruin nice hard working peoples day. Lock that scum bag up and thats that. As for pot i dont indulge no interest I am high on life and people.
