LEWISTON - A former Lewiston priest was disciplined Thursday for sexual abuse of his relatives, nearly half a century after the abuse allegedly began.
The Vatican assigned Marcel L. Robitaille, 70, to a life of prayer and penance.
He is barred from celebrations of the Eucharist and administration of the sacraments. He cannot wear clerical garb or present himself publicly as a priest. He must obtain pre-approval from the bishop of Portland for travel beyond his daily routine and he is required to make daily holy hours and monthly days of recollection.
According to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, Robitaille was accused of sexual abuse in 1989 by members of his family, who alleged incidents of abuse dating back to 1959.
Robitaille was accused by two brothers and a nephew who claimed he had sexually molested them over a period of years.
The men filed a lawsuit against him in 1993 but lost their case. Criminal charges were never filed against Robitaille because of issues with the statute of limitations.
Between 1968 and 1970, Robitaille was assistant pastor at Holy Family Parish in Lewiston, according to church officials.
It was later, while he was serving in another part of the Maine, that the allegations began to surface. In 1989, Robitaille was sent for evaluation and treatment for five months and returned to ministry.
The last reported instance of abuse occurred in 1986, according to the diocese.
In 1993, Robitaille's ministry was restricted again due to pending legal action by members of his family. Soon after, he resigned as pastor.
Another complaint was received in 1997 from a person outside the family. That person claimed Robitaille had abused him in 1972, according to the diocese. By the time that accusation arose, Robitaille was already restricted, meaning he was allowed to celebrate Mass only in particular circumstances. Since April 2002, he has had no public ministry.
That, according to the church, is in keeping with new rules regarding sexual misconduct.
"Since June of 2002, the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People has ensured that for even a single act of sexual abuse of a minor, the offending cleric will be permanently removed from ministry," said Bishop Richard Malone.
Before he was removed from ministry, Robitaille had served in several Maine towns, including Sanford, Waterville, Dexter and Belfast.
Contacted on Thursday about the Vatican decision, Robitaille's family members said they were not ready to discuss the matter. |

He is the one who let all these pedophiles go back to parishes so they could create more victims - yet they want to make him a saint.... go figure.

Just because someone said it happened, did it? In the arena of sexual abuse, once accused, always ruined, whether guilty or not.

Posted By:gil at July 18, 2008 9:00 AM (Suggest Removal) Yeah, it's the pope's fault. C'mon, the Catholic church has been corrupt and full of pedophiles since the dark ages. Because their parishioners were duped into believing their certain brand of religion, they are almost as much to blame. They were raised to believe that a priest could never be wrong and the parents often overlooked what they knew was going on. Any priest convicted should be placed in prison in GenPop and allow real justice to occur.

I was raised in the catholic school/church in Lewiston, I remember the dysfunctional rules we lived by. So, let's see, if I ever get arrested for anything (which I won't), I'll ask the dear judge for a life of prayer and pennance! What a laugh. Treat the priests like everyone else; throw him in the slammer! Pervert!

Posted By:Heather C at July 18, 2008 10:05 AM (Suggest Removal) The prayer and pennance wasn't issued by the court. Everyone here is assuming he's guilty. He hasn't even been brought up on charges. They filed a lawsuit against him in 1993 but lost their case.
Also why do people keep crusifying the Catholic church for an accusation. It's no different then a teacher or police officer being accused.....does that mean that all teachers or all people in uniform are scum?
We never see it when these accused people get the proof that the accusers are lying. That never makes the front page.

Posted By:anon at July 18, 2008 10:38 AM (Suggest Removal) Heather C you must be living in a vacuum. The public crucifies the Catholic church over this issue because for years they KNOWINGLY LET IT HAPPEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN. They bounced around deviant priests into different parishes after sending the accused priest to 'retreats' then off to a new neighborhood and kids to abuse. They choose to act on this issue only when it became a crisis situation.
What makes it different from a teacher and police officer is how the vatican responded to it.
Further, the civil lawsuit (which was against the diosese) was dismissed because the judge ruled that the abuse occurred as a result of his family relationships not in the context of his duties as a priest.

Posted By:Mary at July 18, 2008 6:12 PM (Suggest Removal) the man should be locked away so he can not do this again. What kind of punishment was that. This kind of opunishment is only in the eyes of the catholic church. No wonder people are leaving the catholic faith.

Posted By:paul at July 18, 2008 7:06 PM (Suggest Removal) The Christian Science Monitor did a comprehensive study about three years ago, of clergy sex abuse in the major religious denominations in this country, and found that the overall incidence was very low-less than 1% as I recall- and was less among Catholics than among Protestant and Jewish clergy. Nor has the Catholic Church "been corrupt and full of pedophiles since the dark ages", and I challenge "gil" to document that outrageous, manifestly bigoted accusation, which, of course, he cannot. This is just rank, ignorant hatred, uncalled for, and unworthy of serious discussion here or anywhere else. What do you really know about Catholicism, "gil"? Did you know that the recently deceased Dr. Michael DeBakey was a devout, practicing Catholic? Or that John Von Neumann, the distinguished mathematician and theoretician converted to Catholicism from Judaism? Or that the late Shusako Endo, considered by many to have been Japan's greatest writer of the last century, was a convert and a devout, fervent Catholic? Or that daughter of Admiral Nitze (of WW2 fame) converted and is a Dominican nun in California? Or that General Patton's granddaughter converted from atheism, and is a Benedictine nun in the same monastery in CT. as another noted convert, Mother Dolores Hart, the former movie star? Or that Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas is a fervent, devout convert? Do you think these people are all just fools, gil, and that you and you alone are the enlightened one? No one has to be a "Catholic" or anything else, but what is unacceptable and uncivilized is to throw wild, hate-filled, ignorant and bigoted accusations so recklessly around, without fear of reckoning. That, I call, cowardice. In the contemporary world of commercialized, de-sacrated, debased, anything-goes sexuality, wouldn't it be strange, indeed, if Catholic and other clergy were untainted whatsoever, and lacking in the simple humanity of the rest of us? No one really knows what- if anything- this priest did, he was not convicted, and I, for one, deplore this double and inhumane standard to which he is being held, especially be the sanctimonious hypocrites such as those here, who so cavalierly and heartlessly condemn him- without anything more than the awful hearsay, journalistic "evidence" recounted here. Who of us would like to be treated in this way? "Judge Not,etc., etc." Paul Corrao

Posted By:Robet at July 18, 2008 9:13 PM (Suggest Removal) I was attending Holy Family School when Fr. Robitaille was there. I spent many hours with this man as many of us children did. I have never witnessed or heard of any shady or unappropriate behavior from this man whom has earned my total respect. Once again, a man is measured not by how much good he has done or brought to other people, but by an accusation of a few. May you find peace in your remaining years.
