Downeaster

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

PORTLAND (AP) - In a July 21 story about Amtrak's Downeaster, The Associated Press cited a proposal to expand Amtrak service northward to Brunswick utilizing the former St. Lawrence and Atlantic line.

The story should have noted there are two proposals for expanding Amtrak service. The short-term plan is to utilize existing Pan Am Railways line. The Maine Department of Transportation also is studying a long-term proposal that would follow the former St. Lawrence and Atlantic line from Portland to Yarmouth, where it would connect with Pan Am Railways line to Brunswick.

I don't understand extending Amtrak to Brunswick, which is primarily a hub for marginal and obsolete rail lines, instead of Auburn which has the Guilford Rail System (Pan Am Railways) freight line through Lewiston to Waterville? Did legislators from Lewiston-Auburn area get bamboozled or what?

I agree, why on Earth would they not consider Lewiston or Auburn
